Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Millersville University men's soccer team ground out an 1-1 tie at No. 17 Mercy College on a wet, damp Monday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Marauders recorded their third consecutive draw.
Millersville is now 2-1-3 while the Mavericks remain unbeaten on the year with a 4-0-1 overall record.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• The Mavericks jumped to an early lead as Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus chipped a cross into the box and found the head of Ryan Sipavicius who sunk the ball into the lower right side of the goal. Mercy took the 1-0 lead with five minutes to go until halftime.
• The Marauders got their footing and started to assert themselves in their offensive side. Millersville finally found the back of the net when
Aaron Skelly headed
Spencer Shortt's cross into the lower right corner of the goal, tying the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute.
• Mercy did not allow a shot in either of the two overtimes.
• Mercy opened the contest with three shots on goal in the first three minutes, but junior
Darian McCauley stopped all three to keep the game scoreless. Mercy would hold a slight 8-4 advantage in total shots after 45 minutes of play but Millersville put three of its shots on frame while same total of Mavericks' shots were on goal.
• A close attempt for the Marauders to break through at the start of the game came from senior
Chase Flickinger. He crossed the ball to sophomore
Matteo Adiletta who got a foot on it but kicked it straight to the goalie in the 22nd minute.
• A few seconds out of halftime,
Nathan Maynard earned a free kick opportunity that went off the wall of defenders. The Marauders picked up the pace in the offensive side after halftime by firing seven shots.
HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON QUOTES
• "We put in another decent effort but still lacked a little something to get us over the hump and achieve the win. Some players stepped up off the bench today which was pleasing to see. We are very close and hopefully we find that last piece as we move into PSAC play."
• "[
Aaron Skelly] did well of the bench. He brought us some energy and a good work rate and got rewarded with the goal. I am very happy to see him rewarded for his patience and hard work."
• "We just have to be more clinical and precise in each area of the field but most importantly we need to possess the ball better so we can control games for longer periods. Better game control will allow us to create more and better goal scoring chances for ourselves while also limiting opportunities for the opposition."
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• McCauley played a solid match in goal by recording five saves in each half. In the 110 minutes of action, he totaled a season high 10 saves and faced a total of 22 shots.
• Adiletta and Shortt had a team high three shots with both having two on goal. Shortt recorded his third assist of the season and second consecutive.
• The lone Marauder goal was the first collegiate tally for Skelly.
NOTES
• This was the first time that the Mavericks had given up the lead in a game this season. Skelly's goal was the second goal that the opponent had allowed this season.
• The last time the Marauders had three consecutive draws was in 2004. That streak began with the last time these teams faced off and that ended with a 0-0 tie. The last time the squad played in four overtime periods was in 2008.
• The tie put the series record at 1-1-3.
• Mercy finished the game with a 22-11 edge in total shots while the Mavericks had 11-8 margin in shots on goal. Mercy had a 13-6 margin in corner kicks.
