Millersville, Pa. - All the momentum was on Edinboro's side. The visiting Fighting Scots had rallied from a two-sets-to-none deficit to force a deciding fifth set in Friday's PSAC opener in Pucillo Gymnasium. Edinboro opened the fifth with 6-2 lead, but Millersville head coach
Brian Smith called a timeout. That turned the tide and Millersville scored 12 of the next 15 points to pull away for a 25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 20-25, 15-11 win.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville's 6-2 hole in the fifth came with four Millersville errors. Out of the timeout, setter
Katie Laughman fed
Jayci Suseland for an emphatic kill.
Haley Butler followed with a kill, an Edinboro attack error and a ball handling error on the setter quickly evened the score. The clubs traded points until a pair of Edinbro attack errors gave the Marauders a 10-8 lead. With
Kat Forry serving, Millersville ripped off six consecutive points--five of them on Edinboro miscues. Forry recorded an ace and the Marauders denied back-to-back Edinboro attacks in the stretch as well. Laughman polished off the win by sneakily dropping a shot over the net for a kill.
• Millersville took the first two sets of the match despite totaling just nine kills and hitting .094 in the first. The difference was Edinboro's seven service errors. In the second, Millersville totaled 10 kills to three errors. It broke a 9-9 tie with Forry and Laughman serving the Marauders to eight of the next nine points.
• Edinboro rolled in the third, racing to a 7-1 lead, using two blocks, three aces and six Millersville attack errors. Millersville fell behind 7-1 again in the fourth set as well. Despite the early deficit, Millersville closed the gap to as few as three in both sets (18-15 in the third and 23-20 in the fourth).
COACH BRIAN SMITH QUOTE
• "Fifth sets in volleyball are all about momentum. They got a lead on us to start that set, but we crept back in to tie it up. Then it was back and forth for a little bit, but once we switched the lineup so Jayci covered No. 19 for them we turned things around. I think she helped force some bad attacks."
• "We played really well the first two sets then struggled a little bit with our ball control. They're a really good team. They made the playoffs last year, and we were only 3-25 against them before tonight. This was a huge win for us. To come back in five sets and take it is a really big confidence boost for this young team."
• "(Winning in five sets) is part of the learning process for (the team). We are a really young team. For them to have this experience early in the season could benefit us moving forward if we find ourselves in another tough five-set match."
• "(
Emily Hoffman) did a great job. It's really tough to sit there and not get the opportunity to play. We struggled with ball control and we've noticed in practice that she is very consistent and works hard, so we gave her a shot. To go out there in that moment and produce-I'm happy for her, she did a really good job."
• "This was a great win for us. It'll be a short celebration. Tomorrow we're back at it against Slippery Rock so we have to come back and work tomorrow. Slippery Rock is a completely different kind of team. We feel pretty good after this match, but we still have to show up and play."
