Charlotte, N.C. - A personal best and program record heave on her final attempt helped Millersville University's Sunflower Greene finish as the national runner-up in the shot put, and fellow Marauder Amanda Myers placed fifth in the javelin for her third career All-America finish.
Greene, the 2018 indoor national champ, is now a four-time track and field All-American (twice in both indoor and outdoor seasons), tying Millersville Hall of Fame member Priscilla Jennings for the most track and field All-America finishes in program history. Myers became the first Marauder to finish as an All-American three times in the same event.
"These two have established such an important legacy that future generations of Millersville University track & field will be able to look up to and chase," said head coach Andy Young."
"I am proud of the hard work, commitment and competitiveness," said Millersville throws coach Brittany Hartman. "They rose to the occasion when the pressure was on."
Greene's 52-10 was 6 1/4 inches better than her previous season-best, which had her seeded fourth entering Saturday. Just like at the indoor championships, Greene was at her best against the best in the nation.
"When it is time to compete, I compete," said Greene. "So much of what I've accomplished can be credited to Coach (Hartman). She had me prepared for today."
Greene's second attempt landed at 51-11 3/4, putting her in first place entering the finals. West Texas A&M freshman Zada Swoopes, however, posted a 54-2 1/2 on her first finals attempt, vaulting her into first place. Greene sat in third until her record-setting eighth attempt.
Myers entered Saturday as the No. 7 seed and just made the finals in the No. 8 position after her second toss hit 145-0. Myers' best of the day came on her fifth attempt. Her javelin landed at 151-6, putting her nearly three feet clear of the sixth-place finisher. Madison Wolf of Fort Hays State won the event with a toss of 161-1.
Myers, a four-time national qualifier, improved her standing each year at the NCAA Championships. She placed 13th as a freshman, 10th as a sophomore, sixth as a junior and fifth as a senior. Myers set the school record in the javelin as a sophomore and it has stood since. Myers was also the PSAC runner-up in both the javelin and hammer throw in 2018.
"It's been a fun ride," Myers stated, reflecting on her four-year career.
The duo provided Millersville with 12 team points. As of the time the story was published, Millersville was tied for 18th out of the 62 teams that scored. A total of 112 schools were represented at the championships.
