West Lawn, Pa. - Millersville erupted for 10 runs in the first three innings and went on to post a season-high in both runs and hits in a 17-8 rout of Charleston Sunday evening. The win kept Millersville's NCAA Atlantic Regional run alive and pushed it into the elimination bracket final, which is set for Monday afternoon against Seton Hill.
Â
Dominic Hardaway and
Jimmy Cain both recorded their first career four-hit games and the pair combined for eight RBIs. Hardaway tripled and hit a three-run home run—his team-leading seventh of the season.
Ben Snyder added two hits, walked three times and scored four runs.
Manning Brookens also drove in four runs, going 3 for 6. Brookens is now 10 for 18 in the four regional games.
Ted Williams added two hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Â
The first five Marauders in the lineup combined to score 14 of the team's 17 runs. The Marauders scored their most runs since totaling 22 against California (Pa.) in the 2016 PSAC Tournament.
Â
What a difference three days made. On Thursday, in the first round of the regional, Charleston blanked Millersville 3-0 and held the Marauders to six hits. Millersville's four-run first inning on Sunday was like a heavyweight fighter's right hook in the opening round of a fight. Each of the first four batters reached base and all four scored. The barrage included triples from Snyder and Hardaway.
Â
One inning later, Hardaway muscled a high fastball over the right field wall, landing what was effectively the knockout blow. It capped another four-running inning and gave Millersville an 8-0 lead.
Â
While Millersville led 8-2 after two innings and 10-4 after three, the Golden Eagles tacked on three more in the fifth to close Millersville's lead to three.
Andrew Mayhew entered in the sixth and shut down the Golden Eagles over the next four innings while Millersville scored seven more insurance runs late. Mayhew struck out five and the only hit he allowed was a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
The four innings of work earned Mayhew his second save of the season. The win went to
Stephen Muscovitch, who worked through the fifth inning.
Â
The Marauders and Seton Hill battle Monday at 12 p.m. for a berth to the regional championship round. Mercyhurst awaits with a 3-0 regional record after edging Seton Hill in 11 innings in Sunday's early game. Millersville won three regular season games against Seton Hill in March, but the Griffins won the PSAC Championship game just over one week ago by a 6-1 final. The two clubs have met in the regional six times before and the series is split at three wins apiece. Seton Hill knocked Millersville out of the regional in both 2013 and 2014 while Millersville bounced the Griffins in 2015. Millersville is one win away from its fifth regional championship round appearance since 2011.
