Nabholz tosses gem but Marauders shut out in regional opener

West Lawn, Pa. - Charleston couldn't wait to get Eli Nabholz out of the way. For eight innings, the Millersville right-hander dominated. Nabholz struck out 10 and gave up just two hits, but when he exited, Charleston took advantage. The Golden Eagles broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the ninth, and Nabholz's counterpart Jonathan Carr tossed a complete game, shutting out Millersville, 3-0.

Millersville had its chances. It put the leadoff runner on base five times including every inning between the fourth and seventh. However, Carr induced four double plays, and Millersville made two more outs on the base paths. The golden opportunity came in the seventh when Kaylor Kulina hit a leadoff triple. Carr, however, got Millersville's RBI leader Ben Snyder to pop out. He walked Jimmy Cain. Dominic Hardaway hit a one-out fly to shallow center. Kulina tagged, tested the arm of Colby Johnson, and was pegged at the plate to end the inning.

After a two-out walk issued in the fourth, Nabholz did not allow another Golden Eagle to reach base, sitting down 13 in a row. Nabholz totaled 113 pitches and was pulled in favor of freshman lefty Christian Wingard to start the ninth.

Wingard issued a walk to Johnson, and John Franco Morello then ripped a 1-0 pitch in the right center field gap for a triple, breaking the tie. Dylan Boisclair relieved Wingard but allowed in an inherited run when Steven Davis singled to right. Davis moved up to third on two wild pitches and scored when Austin Hathaway pushed a bunt past the mound.

With Millersville trailing 3-0 and down to its final three outs, Ted Williams hit a lead off single. He, however, was cut down when Cole Friese hit into a 6-4-3 double play on a full-count pitch. That ended Millersville's rally opportunity.

Carr had pitched past the fifth inning just once in his nine starts. He struck out just two, scattered six hits and walked just one.

It is just the second time in Millersville's nine regional appearances that it lost its opening game. The Marauders now drop into the elimination bracket and face Shepherd Friday at 11 a.m. Shepherd was defeated 3-0 by Seton Hill earlier Thursday.
