West Lawn, Pa. - Shepherd just could not find a way to get
Manning Brookens out. The Millersville sophomore had four hits and none was bigger than his two-out single just inside the third base line that brought home
Dominic Hardaway in the bottom of the 11th for a walk-off, 5-4 Millersville win.
For the third time in the 2018 postseason, Millersville rallied from a ninth-inning deficit to win in extra innings. Just like in the PSAC Tournament 10-inning wins over Gannon and Mercyhurst, Millersville scored runs in the bottom ninth to erase a deficit. Friday, the Marauders trailed 4-2 before the rally.
Millersville held a 2-0 lead until the eighth when Shepherd's Brenton Doyle, who had four hits himself, hit a solo home run to right. In the ninth, Shepherd tied the game on a sacrifice fly and took a two-run lead on Justin Smith's two-run home run to right.
Millersville answered right back.
Cole Friese and
Kaylor Kulina started the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles.
Ben Snyder was plunked to load the bases with no outs. Shepherd reliever Mitchell Johnson got
Jimmy Cain to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, but Friese scored to cut the deficit to one. Then with two outs, Hardway slapped the first offering from Mitchell down the right field line, driving in Kulina and tying the score.
Aidan Welch (2-0), who picked up his second win of the postseason after throwing two perfect innings of relief, mowed through the Rams in order in the 10th. Millersville loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame but could not bring home the winning run. Brookens, however, delivered in the 11th.
With one out, Hardaway hit a 2-2 pitch into the right field corner for a double. Hardaway moved up to third on a
Bobby Dorta ground out. Brookens fell behind 0-2 before battling Johnson to a full count. The sixth pitch of the at bat was laced inside the third base bag, past the out-stretched glove of Chas Hoffman.
Brookens now has six its in the two tournament games. Snyder, Hardaway and
Ted Williams all added two hits. Friese scored twice and stole two bases. Kulina reached base three times with two walks and also stole two bases.
Cordell Shannon gave Millersville seven shutout innings before the solo home run in the eighth. He exited with seven hits allowed and five strikeouts. Millersville has won all six of Shannon's career postseason starts, with Shannon holding a 4-0 record. He has given up just two runs in his two starts in this postseason, spanning 15 innings.
Following Doyle's home run in the eighth, Shannon gave up a walk and a single. Dorta inherited both runners with nobody out and Millersville holding a one-run lead. Dorta recorded a strikeout, a ground out and ended the threat with another K.
Millersville advances to play the loser of the West Chester/Mercyhurst game Saturday at 1 p.m.
