Ville opens conference play with a 22-12 win over Edinboro

Millersville, Pa. -- The Marauders continued their high-scoring ways as they defeated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Edinboro 22-12 Saturday afternoon. The Marauders extended their winning streak to five games which is the team's longest under Head Coach Mia Hall's tenure.

Millersville opened the game on a 7-0 scoring run in the first 22 minutes of play. Seniors Callie Kavanaugh and Sabrina Fusco, junior Erin Fagan, and sophomore Sarah Leverentz all scored to provide Millersville a large scoring margin and insurmountable lead. The teams traded goals in the final eight minutes to end the half with Millersville leading Edinboro 10-4.

Fagan, Kavanaugh, and Fusco gave Millersville a 13-4 advantage following a second uncontested scoring run in the first four minutes of the second half. In the following nine minutes, the Fighting Scots responded and outscored the Marauders 4-1. After Edinboro cut Millersville's lead back to 14-8, Coach Hall called a timeout to adjust Millersville's approach. The Marauders outscored the Fighting Scots 8-4 following the timeout including two three-goal scoring runs to close out the game 22-12, in favor of the Marauders.

Despite taking a week off for spring break, the Marauders picked up where they left off a week ago on offense. Millersville's 22 points against Edinboro was the first time the team scored 20 or more points against a PSAC opponent since they scored 20 points at Shippensburg during the 2015 season. Millersville currently owns two of the highest-scoring performances in the PSAC this season.

The Marauders' attack has opened the 2018 season on fire. In it's first five games of 2018, Millersville is averaging 20.6 points per game compared to 12.8 points per game in it's first five games last season.

The midfield and defense compliment the offense by forcing turnovers in transition and limiting open shots on the goal. The Marauders are only allowing 6.4 goals per game while redshirt junior goalkeeper Shannon Davis ranks second in the conference with a 6.46 GAA. Leverentz averages 4.4 groundballs per game, 1.8 caused turnovers per game, and 4.8 draw controls per game in the midfield which all rank in the top-10 in the conference.

Kavanaugh led all players with eight points and six goals. The attacker was a terror from the free position as she scored three goals on five attempts. She added two assists to Millersville's scoring efforts as well. Kavanaugh's 18 goals on the season currently ranks fifth in the conference.

Fusco and Butzner inched closer to claiming program records with their performances against the Fighting Scots. Fusco now sits only three points away from being the program leader. Fusco's four goals against Edinboro increased her lead in the conference to 27 goals which is seven more than any other PSAC player. Butzner's unprecedented run of assists in the opening five games has her five assists away from breaking Abby Mack's single-season assist record. Butzner still ranks first in the conference in assists with 28.

Millersville will put it's winning streak to the test against reigning 2017 PSAC Champions, No. 19 East Stroudsburg. The Marauders are seeking their first win over the Warriors since the 2016 season. The game will be played March 20 at 4 p.m. in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
