Newberry, S.C. - Newberry won game one of Saturday's doubleheader with Millersville 9-6 after scoring three late runs and holding off a Millersville rally. The latter innings were key for the homestanding Wolves again in a 7-6 game two win as they rallied from a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the seventh before rallying again with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
It was the first time since March 2, 2014 that Millersville was swept in a non-conference doubleheader.
Ben Snyder had a big afternoon at the plate, totaling five hits—two in game one and three in game two. He also totaled three RBIs.
Cole Friese recorded two hits in each game and hit his second homer of the season in game two.
GAME 1
Newberry scored a run in each of the first six innings. Millersville starter
Eli Nabholz (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks in four innings. Dylan Southerland (1-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. Cody Fessler picked up his first save of the season.
Despite trailing 4-0 at one point, Millersville pulled within a run at 6-5 after
Eric Callahan doubled in a pair in the fifth, and Snyder and
Brandon White drove in runs in the eighth. But all the ground gained was given right back in the bottom of the inning. Three of the first four batters reached base and all three runners scored. Millersville used three pitchers in the inning.
Millersville saw the game-tying run come to the plate in the top of the ninth.
Kaylor Kulina led off with a single, and
Cole Friese brought him home to bring Millersville within three at 9-6. With one out and two on base, Snyder nearly tied the score with a blast to deep center field that was caught on the warning track.
Dominic Hardaway ripped a liner that was snared by the third baseman for the final out.
Ben Herring drove in three runs for Newberry despite not recording a hit. Five Wolves recorded two hits apiece. Friese, Snyder and Brookens each had two hits.
GAME 2
Friese's solo homer in the fourth and a Snyder RBI double in the sixth gave the Marauders a 2-0 advantage. Starter
Cordell Shannon, who had won each of his previous four starts dating back to last season, cruised through six innings, allowing just one run on three hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. But everything turned for the Marauders in the seventh.
Shannon walked two and hit a batter, loading the bases to start the inning. Millersville turned to
Mike Mock, but Mock couldn't get out of the jam. He walked the first batter he faced and then gave up a two-run double.
Stephen Muscovitch entered and issued a walk and RBI single that put Newberry ahead 5-2. Three of the four runs allowed were credited to Shannon.
Millersville charged back, however, pushing three runs across in the eighth. Millersville took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth when
Jimmy Cain raced home on a throwing error following a Williams fly out.
Walks, of which there were seven in the game, continued to plague Millersville in the ninth, however.
Bobby Dorta gave up a walk and a single to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Peyton Spangler's infield single scored the tying run. Millersville missed a chance at a second out when there was a pop up dropped in foul territory. And after fouling off five consecutive foul count pitches, Kevin Clanton drew a walk-off win for the Newberry win.
Snyder went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a walk. Friese and Williams both had two hits and scored twice.
