Marauders down nationally-ranked Shippensburg, 87-84

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville did it again. For the second year in a row, a nationally-ranked and streaking Shippensburg team came to Pucillo Gymnasium, and for the second year in a row, the Marauders sent the Raiders home with a loss. Getting a front row seat for the 87-84 upset was Ryan Coghlan, who received his Make-A-Wish wish reveal during halftime.

Coghlan joined the team for pregame warm-ups and was on the bench during the game, witnessing Millersville score on its first possession of the game and hold the lead for all but 17 seconds. The Marauders ended Shippensburg's nine-game winning streak.

Marcus Adkison led the Marauders with 25 points on 8 of 11 shooting. Adkison drilled 7 of 8 threes and made each of his first six shots. Jordan Greene added 21 points, scoring 20 or more for the third consecutive game.

Millersville sank a season-high 14 3-pointers and made 12 of 19 in the first half. Adkison spurred the Marauders to a 54-45 halftime lead with 20 points in the opening 20 minutes. His 15th point, scored on a 3-pointer with 7:15 left, put him at 1,001 for his career.

Millersville made only two 3-pointers in the second half, one from James Sullivan and one from Adkison, and it needed every single one. The Marauders led by as many as 11 in the first half and held a 62-52 advantage with 14:57 to play. The Raiders pulled back within striking distance with the brute force and size of Dustin Sleva and John Castello on the block. Sleva finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Castello totaled 24 points and nine boards.

With 8:36 to play, Castello scored inside to cut Millersville's lead to 70-69. But Millersville counter punched every Shippensburg strike. Six times over the final eight minutes Shippensburg cut the lead to one, and with 4:28 to go, a Joe Marshall layup tied the game at 79-79.

A balanced offense made the difference for Millersville. Five different players--D'Marco Suggs, Conrad Chambers, Caden Najdawi, Greene and Adkison--scored retaliatory baskets for Millersville in the final seven minutes.

A Chambers driving right-handed scoop shot gave Millersville and 85-82 lead with 1:35 to play. Shippensburg looked to Justin McCarthur, the PSAC's leading 3-point shooter, for the tie, but his shot missed. Millersville came up empty on its next trip, but Shippensburg, on the defensive rebound, stepped out of bounds, giving Millersville a chance to take 24 more seconds off the clock.

A Jamal Washington layup was blocked by Sleva with 28 seconds left, and Clay Conner was fouled from behind in a sprint up the floor. Conner missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Castello grabbed the rebound and made the put-back to cut Millersville's lead to 85-84. Forced to foul, Shippensburg sent Adkison to the line, and he canned both for a three-point lead.

But Shippensburg failed to get off shots on each of its final two possessions. Sleva was called for a travel with 10 seconds left trying to work for an open 3-pointer. With four seconds left, Conner's inbound pass sailed over the out-stretched arms of Castello, who was set up in the opposite corner.

Millersville shot 55.6 percent from the field. Chambers chipped in 13 points and seven assists. Shippensburg shot 50.9 percent from the field.

Millersville, now winners of three of the last four, plays three of its last four regular season games on the road. The Marauders travel to Bloomsburg on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip.
