Winston-Salem, N.C. - After a walk-off defeat in Friday's season opener, Millersville baseball retaliated Saturday with a pair of 10-4 wins in a doubleheader sweep of Winston-Salem State.
Ted Williams totaled six hits and reached base eight times in the twinbill, and
Ben Snyder drove in two runs in each game. Sophomore
Tyler Yankosky (1-0) picked in the win in the opener with five innings pitched, and junior
Cordell Shannon (1-0) allowed just three hits and one run in game two.
Shannon has won his last four starts dating back to April 29, 2017. He's allowed just two runs and 12 hits over his last 28 innings.
The Marauders scored early and often in both games, totaling seven runs (three in game one and four in the game two) in the first inning.
Millersville (2-1) and Winston-Salem State (1-2) have played to open each of the last seven seasons. Millersville has won the last three series.
GAME 1
The Millersville lineup staked Yankosky to an early 6-0 lead giving the sophomore right-hander had all the run support he needed. All four hits and all three runs Yankosky allowed--three singles and a bases-loaded double from Randy Norris--came in the second inning. Yankosky's other four innings saw him strikeout four and issue just one walk.
Eight of nine Marauders drove in a run.
Ted Williams reached base four times with three hits and a walk.
Cole Friese hit a homer, a single, drove in two and scored twice.
Ben Snyder also had three hits with two RBIs and two runs.
Williams and Friese set the table for a fast start in both the first and second innings. After both singled, Snyder drove in both with a single of his own.
Brandon White and
Manning Brookens also singled in runs in the opening frame. In the second, Williams walked, and Friese smacked his first home run of the season.
Eric Callahan,
Dominic Hardaway and
John Turner all drove in runs with sacrifice flies.
Liam Grande struck out two in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work.
Bobby Dorta worked the final two innings, striking out two.
GAME 2
Williams jump-started the Marauders in the first inning with a leadoff double. Snyder followed with a one-out, RBI double, and Hardaway plated Snyder with a single.
Jimmy Cain, making his first appearance of the season, pushed Millersville's lead to 3-0 with a single of his own.
Shannon surrendered a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first then settled in. The lefty shutout the Rams over the next four innings. After the first, he gave up just two singles and a walk while striking out three.
Millersville blew open the game in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs on four singles, two walks and an error. Cain's two-run single capped a two-hit, three-RBI game. Hardaway went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Chris Blair pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief.
