Third-set comeback highlights Millersville's sweep of IUP

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville looked well on its way to a sweep of visiting IUP until falling behind 23-10 in the third set. That hardly mattered to the Marauders, however. Millersville scored 11 consecutive points and 16 of 17 to win the third set 26-24 and polish off the 3-0 win (25-15, 25-18, 26-24).

Millersville improved to 10-1 at home and is now 5-0 against conference opponents inside Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders improved to 13-11 overall and 8-7 in PSAC play. The win was Millersville's first over IUP since 2006.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Millersville easily dispatched IUP in the first set, totaling 12 kills to four errors while also totaling three aces. IUP managed just six kills. Millersville turned a four-point lead into a 21-13 advantage with Courtney Turocy serving. Turocy tallied a pair of aces in helping the Marauders pull away.
• The second set was all Millersville early. The Marauders led by as many as 14 at 21-7 and finished the set with 14 kills to three errors. Lindsey Blevins tallied five kills with no errors in the set. However, IUP scored nine times in the next 11 serves, building momentum that would carry into the third set.
• In the third, IUP broke a 5-5 tie by scoring eight in a row--five coming on kills and three on Millersville attack errors. The Crimson Hawks built a 23-10 lead following four Marauder attack errors, a kill and an ace in a span of six serves. Chyna Gubbings jump-started the Millersville comeback, though. Her back-to-back kills and an ace by Samantha Miller got the Marauders rolling. Miller would serve the Marauders to within 24-21. In those 11 consecutive points, Millersville totaled seven kills--four from Jayci Suseland and three from Gubbings. IUP's Kylie Osborn finally snapped the Marauders' streak with a kill and put her team at set point. An IUP attack error extended the match, and a ball handling error pulled Millersville within one. Emily Hoffman's ace evened the score. Gubbings and Butler combined for a block to give the Marauders a lead, and Gubbings closed the set with a kill.
• In the third set alone, Gubbings totaled six kills to one error, a block solo and two block assists.

COACH BRIAN SMITH QUOTES
• "We felt confident coming into this game. Before the game we talked about not having a hangover from last night. The second set we were ahead by a bit and tried to get some playing time for other players. That's always risky because then you come into the third set a little sloppy. We were not passing the ball well in that first set, but then man, what a comeback. (Samantha Miller) did a great job serving, and it was great to finish with that phenomenal comeback."
• "I've been coaching a lot years, and I've seen one or two (comebacks like that), but that does not happen very often. We didn't stop playing and settled down with our control. We got more opportunities on offense from that. It's been a long time since I've been here that I've seen something like that. That match we played earlier this season where we were up 24-18 and ended up losing; this comeback was more than double that and we were on the right end of it."
• "'(Gubbings) is very athletic. She seems to be getting more and more comfortable and has been playing in the middle a lot recently. Having not played there before, she gets better in that spot every week."
• "Last weekend was tough without Jayci. But we're also 10-1 at home; we're really comfortable playing here. I'm glad that we get to finish our season here so hopefully we can finish out strong."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
• Suseland led three Marauders in double-digit kills with 13 on 18 swings (.556). She also added two block assists. Gubbings finished with 10 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Blevins tallied 10 kills to one error and a .321 hititng percentage.
Kat Forry led the team with 13 digs and Blevins added 10.
• Hoffman totaled a career-high three aces.

NOTES
• IUP had won nine consecutive meetings with Millersville prior to Saturday. Millersville improved to 9-16 all-time against IUP.
• Millersville's .245 hitting percentage was its best in a match since Sept. 8.
• Millersville's eight aces were its most since Oct. 2.

UP NEXT
• Millersville has three matches remaining in the regular season--all of which are at home. West Chester comes to Pucillo Gymnasium on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The first 100 Millersville students in attendance receive a free Millersville volleyball rally towel.
