No. 7 field hockey loses 3-2 to No. 2 East Stroudsburg in overtime

Millersville, Pa. - After a clutch goal by Erica Tarsi late in the second half sent the game to overtime, Karisa Turner scored her first goal of the season in the 76th minute to give East Stroudsburg a 3-2 victory. This game was a rematch of last season's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament semifinal round, which the Warriors won 3-1.

The Marauders fall to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in PSAC play, while East Stroudsburg improves to 12-2 and remains undefeated in conference play with a 7-0 mark.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• Just under six minutes into overtime, Karisa Turner took advantage of a failed clear attempt and shot the loose ball into the back of the cage to secure the victory for the Warriors.
• It initially looked as though East Stroudsburg would win the game at the end of regulation, but in the 68th minute Emma Boutcher sent a pass from the right side of the circle to Erica Tarsi on the left side. Tarsi fired off a shot that was saved but then slapped another shot from her knees that went past the goalkeeper and tied up the game.
Kyra Brakefield scored the other Millersville goal less than 30 seconds into the game. She charged down the left side of the field from 30 yards out and slid the ball into the right side of the cage off a Warrior defender.
• East Stroudsburg tied the game in the fifth minute when Ashley Ceschini fired a rocket from the top of the circle towards the right of the cage where Bailey Quinn was in position to tip in the pass.
• Tarsi had a chance to give the Marauders back the lead when she was awarded a penalty stroke in the eighth minute. She fired it towards the right side where Maddie Richie, who entered the game with the lowest goals against average in the PSAC, managed to make the save.
• Quinn scored her second goal of the game just before halftime in the 34th minute. Taylor Gramberg sent in a pass from the right wing and Quinn deflected the shot from the middle of the circle into the back of the cage.

COACH SHELLY BEHRENS QUOTES
• "We played with an incredible amount of fight and heart. From the first whistle we were ready to go; Kyra scoring by herself early on was huge. They're a very good team and we always have great games with them. Scoring with two minutes to go was so big. I instructed the penalty stroke in the first half, so that's my fault. Our goalkeeping was okay tonight, I thought Autumn Peters played hard. She came up big in overtime to keep it tied. We just came up short tonight."
• "That was a gusty finish by Erica Tarsi late in the second half with the clock winding down. Her ability to keep firing off shots is great."
• "I don't think we were great on defense in the first half. East Stroudsburg is not a team you want to be soft on defense against. But I liked how they responded. I thought they stepped up in pockets in the second half and our midfield defense was a positive. I love how Meredith Fagan and Jordan Goddard responded, they really played their hearts out tonight."
• "We hesitated a bit on penalty corners tonight. I thought we executed some of them very well, but we couldn't finish. That's certainly something we can get better at."
• "Tonight was my fault. The penalty stroke was my call and the goalkeeping is my area. But we will get better from this. We may feel unhappy about it now, but we'll be back and ready to work in 24 hours. There's still a lot of hockey to play, we're going to keep going and we're not done yet. I love what I keep seeing from us; we're only one or two steps away from breaking out. It's up to me to get us there."
• "I'm amazed that Sol Ortiz-Kreiner played tonight after she lost a tooth on the field during last Saturday's game. She is one tough kid."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
Erica Tarsi fired off a team-high four shots, three on goal. Kya Brakefield was second with two shots, both on goal. Aliza Mizak, Sol Ortiz-Kreiner and Amber Macdonald each notched one shot.
Autumn Peters made three stops in the cage and in the third minute of overtime was faced with a one-on-one situation. She left her cage and stopped the Warrior forward to keep the game tied.

NOTES
• This marks only the fourth time East Stroudsburg allowed two goals in a game this season. The Warriors had only allowed two goals in their last seven matches prior to tonight's contest, both to Kutztown on Oct. 17.
• East Stroudsburg now leads the all-time series 36-24-1.
• The Marauders remain winless at home against the Warriors dating back to 2016.
• This was the third overtime match these two teams have played and the first East Stroudsburg has won.
• Both teams earned seven penalty corners and the Warriors held a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots.

UP NEXT
• Millersville will take a break from PSAC play when it hosts Mercy College on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
