No. 8 field hockey cruises to 5-0 win over Mercyhurst on Senior Day

Millersville, Pa. - The No. 8 Millersville University field hockey team easily handled Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon, winning 5-0 and not allowing a shot on goal until the 67th minute. Seniors Aliza Mizak and Jaycie St. John were honored prior to the start of the contest.

The Marauders improve to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play, while the Lakers fall to 3-10 and 1-4 in conference play.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
Aliza Mizak celebrated Senior Day by opening the scoring in the sixth minute. Kyra Brakefield took a penalty corner and sent the pass to Sol Ortiz-Kreiner on the right side. She fired a rocket which Mizak tipped in from the middle of the circle.
• In the 12th minute, Erica Tarsi was awarded a penalty shot, which she sent past the goalkeeper to bump the Millersville lead up to 2-0.
• Ortiz-Kreiner manufactured another goal just over six minutes into the second half. She took a penalty corner and sent the initial pass to Alexis Gazzio on the left side who then passed the ball across the top of the circle to Jordan Goddard. Goddard slapped a shot towards the left side of the cage where Ortiz-Kreiner was in position to tip in the shot and make it a three-goal game.
• In the 50th minute, Georgina Wall received a pass and was by herself on the right side of the cage trying to sneak the ball past the goalkeeper while fending off a Mercyhurst defender. After multiple shot attempts, she managed to swat the ball into the back of the cage for her first goal since Sept. 2.
Emma Boutcher scored the team's final goal of the game in the 58th minute. Niamh Murphy-O'Neil sent a penalty corner to Boutcher who then passed the ball to Goddard. She fired the ball into traffic, but Murphy-O'Neil managed to find Boutcher in the scrum and she sent the ball into the right side of the cage.

COACH SHELLY BEHRENS QUOTES
• "It's that time of year. I was excited to see multiple players score. This is what we've been working towards. It could have been more timely. I thought we played well. Seven minutes into the game I could tell it was going to be a good day for us."
• "Being ahead by a lot is nicer than overtime or holding onto a slim lead. I keep saying every week that I love the direction we're heading in. Law of probability, we're going to break out soon. Today gave the girls some confidence. It was a great team effort and it started with our defense."
• "Today was a confidence builder. Mercyhurst is deadly on its corners. We gave up a few more corners than I would have liked, but I like how we responded. Getting the shared shutout with Autumn Peters and Katie Baker was great. Katie did a great job today. It is definitely a confidence builder from front to back."

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
Erica Tarsi fired off a team-high six shots, three on goal. Aliza Mizak was right behind her with five shots, while Sol Ortiz-Kreiner, Emma Boutcher and Georgina Wall each totaled two shots.
Autumn Peters and Katie Baker combined for the shutout in the cage. Peters did not face any shots in over 62 minutes of action, while Baker made four stops in less than eight minutes to preserve the shutout.

NOTES
• Millersville out shot the Lakers 19-8 and held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners, not allowing any to Mercyhurst in the first half.
• This marks the Marauders' 14th-straight win over the Lakers. Millersville improves to 16-4 in the all-time series and remains undefeated against Mercyhurst under Shelly Behrens.
• This also marks the fourth time this season Millersville shutout its opponent.

UP NEXT
• The Marauders will next host East Stroudsburg, who sit atop the PSAC standings, on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. The Warriors hold a spotless 6-0 record in conference play.
