East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Millersville volleyball entered Friday's PSAC Southeast road match at division-leading East Stroudsburg with three consecutive losses, but the Marauders put an end to the skid emphatically, beating the first-place Warriors, 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-23).
The win pushed Millersville above .500 at 10-9, but more importantly to 5-5 in PSAC play--just two wins behind East Stroudsburg (17-5, 7-3) in the standings.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
• A youthful Millersville club had lost late leads in recent losses to West Chester and Pitt-Johnstown, but that wasn't an issue Friday night. The Marauders won tightly-contested first and third sets by preserving narrow leads while playing a dominant second set.
• Neither team was sharp in the first set with Millersville committing seven errors and East Stroudsburg totaling 10. Millersville trailed 19-15, but used kills from
Haley Butler,
Katie Laughman and
Lindsey Blevins to start a 6-0 run. The Marauders scored eight of the next nine points, and while ESU made the score 24-23,
Jayci Suseland recorded her fourth kill of the set for the win.Â
• It was all Millersville in the second. Millersville totaled 13 kills with just one error, hitting .414. Blevins and Suseland combined for 13 kills. The Marauders also added two blocks and two service aces in the convincing 11-point win.
• The third set saw East Stroudsburg scored on four of the first five rallies, but Millersville rallied. Trailing 10-8, the Marauders scored eight of the next nine points. The run included four kills from
Jayci Suseland. The Marauders never relinquished the lead and never let ESU retie the set despite the Warriors four times after the teams hit 20 points.
Lindsey Blevins ended the 25-23 set with a kill.
COACH BRIAN SMITH QUOTES
"This was one of our better passing performances in the last month. We passed well as a team. Haley made some good defensive plays down the stretch in the first set. We made some adjustments on offense that helped us out. We won the pass, we won the serve, and when you do that, you'll win matches."
"[This is great for their confidence. We had a plan, we executed it. The third set we were down by a few points but we didn't lose our poise. That was really good."
