Millersville, Pa. - Millersville drilled eight first-half 3-pointers and built a 25 point lead with less than 16 minutes to play but Mansfield put a scare into the home team late. Millersville's lead dwindled to just two points before
Jamal Washington and
Marcus Adkison made two key defensive stops and hit clutch free throws to clinch a 77-71 win for the Marauders.
The Marauders could do no wrong on offense in the opening 20 minutes. They hit 8 of 11 threes, shot 65.5 percent from the field and build a 48-27 lead at the break. But Millersville made just six total field goals and 1 of 10 threes in the second half. The saving grace came at the free throw line where Millersville scored 16 of its 29 second-half points. In the final 26 seconds, with the game in the balance, Washington made both of his attempts and Adkison sank six in a row.
Four Marauders scored in double figures led by
James Sullivan's career-high 19 points. He made 6 of 10 shots and 3 of 7 threes and added five rebounds and two steals. Adkison scored 18 points and made four steals, including one with 10 seconds left that dashed Mansfield's hopes. Washington scored 12 and grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes.
Jordan Greene scored all 12 of his points in the first half.
Greene and Sullivan was at the fore of Millersville's first-half onslaught. Greene drilled 5 of 6 shots shots and made both of his threes. Sullivan made 5 of his 7 shots, matching Greene's 12 points.
Millersville's lack of offensive rhythm in the second half could be at least partially contributed to a halted pace of play caused by nine foul calls in the first 3:25 of the period. Still, a Sullivan three put Millersville in front 56-31 with 15:50 to go. From that point forward, however, Millersville shot 3 of 19 from the floor, allowing Mansfield to slowly creep back into contention.
Over the next 14:30, Malik Carter scored 16 points, leading a 34-13 Mansfield run. Tyler Moffee's 3-pointer with 1:20 to go cut Millersville's lead to 69-67. Adkison missed a pull up jumper at the other end, but Mansfield, with a chance to tie or take the lead, was foiled by Washington, who picked the pocket of Cedric Powell. He was immediately fouled, and knocked down both free throws.
Carter quickly pushed the ball into the front court and scored on a right-hand layup to put Mansfield within two one again. but needing to foul to stop the clock, Mansfield sent the wrong man to the line. Adkison, who entered the game ranked fifth in the PSAC in free throw percentage, drilled both attempts, and then came through with a key defensive stop by swiping the ball from Matt Tamanosky. Adkison made four more foul shots in the last seven seconds.
Millersville improved to 6-1 when it makes at least eight threes. The win gave Millersville a season sweep of Mansfield and evened the team's PSAC records at 5-10.
Millersville plays to consecutive road games before returning on Feb. 7. First up is a trip to West Chester on Jan. 31.
