Lock Haven, Pa. - Marcus Adkison had carried a struggling Millersville offense all night, so with the game tied and eight seconds left, it only made sense that the ball was in his hands. Adkison's right-handed, driving lay-up banked in as time expired, clinching a hard-fought 66-64 road win over Lock Haven.
Adkison scored a game-high 23 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the field and 3 of 5 shooting from three. While Adkison made 56.3 percent of his shots, the rest of the team combined to shoot 17 of 54 (.315). Still, the Marauders (6-12, 4-8 PSAC) led for nearly 34 minutes of the 40 minute game. Millersville led by as many as 10 in the first half, but over the final 26 minutes, neither team led by more than six points.
Millersville held a 64-59 advantage with 2:24 to play, but couldn't put away the homestanding Bald Eagles. Over the final five minutes, Millersville made just three field goals, and Lock Haven stayed close by hitting 7 of 8 free throws in that span. That one miss was crucial, however.
Lock Haven trailed 64-63 with the ball and a chance to run out the clock. Amir Hinton, the PSAC's leading scorer, drove baseline from the right wing and drew a foul on Millersville's
Caden Najdawi with eight seconds to play. With Millersville over the limit, Hinton had two free throws. His first hit back iron. He swished his second to tie the score at 64-64.
Millersville elected to not call a timeout. The ball was inbounded to Adkison who immediately drove hard to his right, knifed into the lane and lofted a shot over two defenders. His shot banked in as the buzzer sounded, giving Millersville its first win in Thomas Field House since 2013, a game which went to overtime.
Millersville overcame 37.1 percent shooting by sinking eight 3-pointers and forcing 19 turnovers, including eight from Hinton. It was the second-most committed by Lock Haven all season. Hinton finished with 20 points, extending his run of games with 20 or more points to six.
Adkison has scored 20 or more in four of his last five outings and has scored in double figures in 17 in a row, matching the longest such streak by a Marauder since Charlie Parker opened 2007 with 17 straight.
Conrad Chambers helped the Marauders with 11 points, hitting 3 of 7 from three.
Jordan Greene recorded his fourth career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Millersville travels to Gannon on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
