Late rally helps Kutztown past Millersville

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville held a 10-point lead over Kutztown with just over 15 minutes to play, but from that point forward the Marauders struggled to put the ball in the basket while Kutztown made seemingly everything it put in the air. The Golden Bears outscored the Marauders 46-26 over the final 15:46 to pull off an 87-77 come-from-behind win.

Kutztown (12-2, 8-2 PSAC) entered the game as the top shooting team in the PSAC and ranked second in scoring average, but a scrappy Millersville club had kept the Golden Bears largely in check into the middle of the second half. The Marauders took a 51-41 lead on a Jordan Greene jumper. But when Anthony Lee scored nearly a minute later, that set in motion a 16-2 Kutztown run and propelled the visitors in front. From there, Kutztown made 16 of 23 shots, four threes and 10 of 12 foul shots. In the same period of time, Millersville made just 7 of 25 shots.

Marcus Adkison scored 16 of Millersville's final 26 points. He finished with a game-high 27, making a career-high 12 of 12 free throws. Nearly half (12) of Millersville's points in the last 15-plus minutes came from the line. The Marauders finished the game with a .397 shooting percentage after hitting 17 of 34 (.500) in the first half. Kutztown shot 50 percent for the game including 18 of 26 (.692) in the second half.

The Marauders built its early lead and stayed close to one of the PSAC's top offensive teams by pestering its two All-PSAC East guards Ethan Ridgeway and Anthony Lee into a combined 17 turnovers. Millersville forced Kutztown to commit a season high 23. Freshman James Sullivan was at the fore of that effort, recording six steals while serving as the primary defender on Lee, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week.

Lee finished with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds but scored 14 of those points in the last 16 minutes. He and Ridgeway combined for 30 of Kutztown's final 46.

Millersville last saw the lead with with just over six minutes to play. Sullivan scored on a drive to make it 62-60, but Kutztown answered for a tie, and Ricky Hicks hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to give KU a lead it would not relinquish. With 2:22 to play, Adkison was fouled on a 3-pointer attempt and canned all three attempts to pull the Marauders within 75-73. But on their next three possessions, Millersville went 0 for 2 with a turnover. Kutztown, meanwhile, went 2 for 2 and made four foul shots to build a 10-point lead in a span of just 1:05.

Adkison scored over 20 points for the eight time this season. Caden Najdawi finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. The freshman has averaged 13.3 points and 7.4 rebounds in his last seven games.

Millersville travels to Lock Haven on Jan. 17 for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
