Millersville, Pa. -- The Marauders shot 50 percent from the field and from the 3-point arch while tying their season high for 3-pointers made as Millersville won a crucial match up against fellow division rival Bloomsburg 77-65 Wednesday night.
While the shooting efficiency was one of the biggest factors in the Marauders' victory, the efficient team play was another contributing factor. The Marauders assisted 18 of their 27 field goals including four assists each from redshirt junior
Kendra Bamberger, sophomore
Courtney Dimoff and freshman
Lauren Lister.
Determined to turn up the offensive tempo compared to their game against Mansfield, the Marauders emphasized pace on the fast break in the first quarter. Millersville nabbed six points in the paint and seven fast break points. In the half-court, Millersville passed its way into points as the team recorded five assists in the first quarter. Thanks to the crisp passing, the outside shot fell early for Millersville as Dimoff and redshirt junior
Janelle Robinson each scored a three pointer. The Marauders shot over 50 percent from the field and 67 percent from the three point arch to build an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Millersville watched its eight-point lead evaporate early in the second quarter as the outside shot fell for the Huskies. A pair of threes in the middle of the quarter gave Bloomsburg a five-point lead as Millersville went scoreless for five minutes. However, a Dimoff fade-away broke the cold streak and started a 12-4 run by the Marauders. During the run, Lister earned four points and was crafty in the paint as she earned an old-fashioned three point play before forcing another trip to the line late in the quarter. The Marauders wrapped up the quarter with a pivotal stop as Lister and Bamberger trapped the Bloomsburg ball-handler and forced her to travel. Millersville took a 33-30 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Marauders shot the lights out of Pucillo Gymnasium during the third quarter as the team collectively shot 9-16 from the field including 3-5 from the three-point line. Dimoff stayed hot from the arch with two long balls while Hall contributed a three of her own. Lister was the facilitator as she recorded four assists including assists on two baskets from beyond the arch. Adding to Millersville's success in the third quarter was its careful ball handling. Millersville only turned the ball over once in the quarter compared to Bloomsburg's eight turnovers. The Marauders were tenacious on defense and forced five steals as well.
Millersville continued its strong shooting in the final quarter to close out Bloomsburg. The Marauders shot 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line as Lister lead the scoring charge with six points. Lister and senior
Alayah Hall stayed aggressive and drove the lane to force Bloomsburg fouls. The pair were the main contributors at the charity stripe in the final quarter.
Hall scored in double-figures for the 12th straight game and has scored in double-figures in 13 of 14 games this season. She lead all scorers with 19 points while shooting almost 43 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three point line.
Lister continues to impress in her freshman campaign as she finished second on the team with 16 points. The guard set new career highs with 29 minutes played, four steals and four assists. Lister has been effective coming off the bench, and her ability to drive the lane and get to the free throw line equaled more points for Head Coach
Mary Fleig's squad.
Dimoff finished third on the team with 13 points while enjoying one of her most efficient shooting nights this season. The guard shot 50 percent from the field for the third time this season while also shooting 50 percent or better from the three point arch for the first time this season. Dimoff paired her scoring with the aforementioned assists and five rebounds.
The Marauders improved to 7-7 and 4-6 in the PSAC. Millersville remains in the fourth position in the PSAC East standings after Kutztown dispatched Mansfield Wednesday night. Millersville returns to Pucillo Gymnasium on Jan. 13 when they host a pivotal match up with Kutztown at 1 p.m.
