Second quarter explosion leads Kutztown past Millersville

Kutztown, Pa. - If only Millersville could get a redo on the last nine minutes of the second quarter. In that brief span Millersville found out first-hand why Kutztown's Craig Reynolds is the NCAA leader in all-purpose yards. The redshirt junior tailback scored three of Kutztown's five second quarter touchdowns, and the Golden Bears went on to a 41-21 victory over the visiting Marauders Saturday.

Kutztown churned up 328 yards of total offense in the first half alone and did so with uncanny balance—passing for 162 and rushing for 158. Millersville produced just 118 yards on three more snaps. Reynolds nearly did more than that on his own in the first half. He caught a 35-yard TD pass to put his team up 17-7. Then, in the final minute of the half, Reynolds scored twice. The first came on a 10-yard run and the second came on a 53-yard punt return with just three seconds left in the half.

That short outburst was enough for Kutztown. Yet in the other 51 minutes of the game, Millersville out-scored Kutztown 21-6, and the Marauders' defense surrendered just 52 yards in the entire second half. And while Reynolds finished with 161 all-purpose yards, Millersville held him well below his averages as he entered the game averaging 101 on the ground and 254 all-purpose yards. Reynolds managed 56 rushing yards and 3.8 yards per carry.

With quarterbacks Tony Staffieri and Collin Shank both on the shelf with injuries, Millersville pressed Stephen Flanagan into service for his first career start. Flanagan led three scoring drives including two in the second half. He made a connection with Tyler Zilen in the second quarter and Xavier Jenkins made his first career touchdown catch with 6:01 left in the fourth.

Flanagan and the Marauders moved the ball early, reaching Kutztown territory on each of their first two drives. Millersville pulled within three points less than one minute into the second quarter when Flanagan found tight end Tyler Zilen for a four-yard hook up, making the score 10-7. It was the first passing TD of Flanagan's career and the fifth for Zilen.

The drive traveled 76 yards in 10 plays and ate up 5:09 off the clock, but Kutztown's defense adjusted and not only did Millersville not pick up a first down on any of its final three drives of the half, its yardage total for those possessions equaled -1 yard.

Meanwhile, in the final 9:10 of the half, Kutztown struck for at least 10 yards on seven plays. Quarterback Collin DiGalbo, who rushed for a team-high 87 yards and went 9 for 20 for 156 through the air, hit Reynolds from 35-yards out for a TD, and later found Conor Sullivan for a 49-yard TD strike. After Reynolds' two final-minute touchdowns, Kutztown held a 38-7 lead at the half.

Millersville scored on its opening drive of the third quarter, taking nearly six minutes off the clock and moving 79 yards. The drive included a 39-yard reception by Kevin Wiggins and was capped by a two-yard Kobe Miranda TD run. Millersville's final score came on a six-play, 57-yard drive in which Flanagan gained 21 yards on the ground and completed the 29-yard pass to Jenkins.

Wiggins finished with six catches for 56 yards, putting him right at 2,000 receiving yards for his career. The senior is just the sixth Marauder to ever reach the milestone.

Tyrone Gibson received a career high 16 carries and finished with 62 yards.

The defense was led by Tommy Halloway's season-high nine tackles and one sack. Brendan Sherman broke up three passes.

Kutztown continued to have Millersville's number, winning its eighth consecutive game in the series, scoring at least 38 points in all seven wins while holding Millersville to 14 points or fewer in seven in a row.

Millersville returns home Saturday, Sept. 30 to face PSAC East foe Bloomsburg.
