Millersville, Pa. -- The Millersville women's soccer team earned a 1-1 result against No. 21 Seton Hill University to break a two-game losing streak against conference opponents.
The teams traded possession early before Millersville broke the stalemate in the 14th minute. The Marauders earned possession in the center attacking end, and junior
Delaney Meadows dribbled past Seton Hill defenders near the penalty box. She fed a through ball that found sophomore
Kay Liebl who only had the goalie to beat. Seton Hill keeper Jessica Neill stepped up in the box but found herself in no-man's-land as Liebl was able to glide the ball past Neill and into the bottom right corner of the net.Â
The Griffins dominated possession for much of the second half. Millersville's back line was forced to absorb pressure and simply boot the ball back up field to the Seton Hill defenders. Millersville had its chances late in the second half before Seton Hill was awarded a free kick outside the box. The ball was crossed into the middle of the box and the Marauders failed to clear the ball. Seton Hill's Melanie Renda was able to take advantage of the chaos in the box and sneak the ball past sophomore
Katia Mujica for the equalizer. The 1-1 score held until the end of regulation.
Neill was called into action early in the first overtime as Millersville played multiple dangerous through balls up the center to freshman
Talia Grynkewicz. Neill managed to scoop up the ball every time Grynkewicz was about to take her shot. The Griffins scored what they thought was the game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining, but the sideline judge's offsides call kept the Marauders alive.
Worn out from over 100 minutes of play, both teams traded possession in the final overtime but failed to create any dangerous scoring opportunities. The clock ticked down to zero and the Marauders walked off with a result.
The Marauders broke their losing streak to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents while holding the high-flying Griffins to only one late second half goal. Entering the game, the Griffins outscored their opponents 15-4, but the addition of sophomore
Alyssa Antonelly back into the starting back line allowed the defense to better absorb pressure. Antonelly, junior
Lauren Hoffman and freshman
Paige Mancini were effective in limiting shots at sophomores
Kate Phillips and Katia Mujica.
The Marauders improved to 2-3-2 and follow up their draw with a trip to conference rival East Stroudsburg University Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
