Millersville draws at California (Pa.)

California, Pa. -- The Millersville women's soccer team opened conference play with a 2-2 draw against California (Pa.) Saturday.

California drew first blood early as the ball found the top right corner in the fourth minute. Millersville played fast on the front end during the first half and ripped off six shots including three on goal. Despite continued threats on the California goal, Millersville failed to equalize and entered the halftime down 1-0.

Millersville started the second half by ripping off three shots and earning three corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes. In the 57th minute, senior Rachel Lyon fed junior Delaney Meadows the ball and Meadows netted her second goal of the season. The Marauders continued to fire shots at the California goal and their aggression paid off when freshman Talia Grynkewicz's shot found the back of the net at the left corner in the 82nd minute giving Millersville the lead with eight minutes remaining. However, disaster struck 30 seconds later when California earned an own goal to tie the game at 2-2 when the ball was deflected off a Millersville defender.

Millersville turned up the pressure on California's defense while neutralizing its counter attack. Following the own goal, 28 minutes were played between the end of the second half and subsequent two overtimes. In that time Millersville recorded eight shots and three corner kicks while California failed to register a shot and only earned one corner kick. However, the score held and the match ended in a draw.

The Marauders thoroughly dominated the Vulcans in every facet of the game except the score. Millersville recorded 23 shots with 11 on goal while California recorded four shots with three on goal. Millersville earned six more corner kicks than California as well.

Grynkewicz continued to impress as the forward recorded eight shots with five on goal while scoring her first goal of her Millersville career. Meadows recorded five shots with two on goal while scoring her second goal as a Marauder. Sophomore Kay Liebl shot 50 percent of her shots on goal while senior Stacie Hallinan shot three shots of her own.

The Marauders are now 1-0-1 on the season including a 0-0-1 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Millersville continues conference play on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at Bloomsburg University.
