New York, N.Y. - Collin Shank came off the bench to lead three second half scoring drives, but turnovers and special teams miscues proved Millersville's undoing in Saturday's 28-20 loss at Pace. An interception and two lost fumbles in the opening 20 minutes of the game put the Marauders behind by 14 at the half, and a 57-yard kickoff return to open the third quarter followed by a blocked punt and short field touchdown gave Pace the cushion it needed to hold off the Marauders' late charge.
One year ago, Millersville used three Pace turnovers to score a 28-7 opening night victory. But the tables were turned on Pace's home field. Millersville's first four drives ended fumbled, downs, fumble, interception. Pace led 21-0 and 28-7 before Shank and Co. put a fright into Pace's home fans. Shank pulled Millersville within 28-14 with 10 minutes to play, finishing a 12-play, 92-yard drive with a two-yard plunge. Shank completed four passes on the drive including two to tight end
Tyler Zilen. After the Millersville defense forced a three-and-out, Shank hit three consecutive passes and scrambled 16 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the game. The extra point, however, failed, leaving Millersville down by eight with 5:14 left.
But the Marauders received one last shot. Pace's ensuing drive was limited to just four yards, and a 48-yard punt started the Marauders on their own 32 with 3:19 to play. Millersville pushed ahead to its own 43 before a negative pass play lost four yards on first down and a 14-yard completion to Zilen was wiped out by a holding call. Pushed back to their own 29, Shank and
Kevin Wiggins hooked up for 14, but on fourth-and-10, Shank was sacked, effectively ending the game.
Shank threw for 145 yards, completing 12 of 27 attempts. He also rushed for 28 yards and two scores.
Kobe Miranda led the team in receiving and rushing, catching six passes for 55 yards and totaling 43 yards on the ground.
The Millersville defense held Pace to just 225 total yards but the difference was turnovers. Pace did not commit one while Millersville lost three fumbles and threw a pick.
Millersville's opening drive ended on the Pace 33 on a
Tony Staffieri fumble. A Pace touchdown followed less than three minutes later. Drive two stalled on the Pace 31 when Staffieri was stuffed for a four-yard loss on fourth-and-one. The Marauders' third drive ended in a lost fumble on their own 28, and Pace quickly capitalized with an early second-quarter touchdown. The Marauders, trailing 14-0, answered by driving inside Pace territory but Staffieri was intercepted on first-and-10 from at the Pace 12.
Dekyri Mims returned second half's opening kick off 57 yards to the Millersville 28. Pace was added by a Millersville pass interference penalty on a third and long and converted one fourth down before Dan Anerella tossed a 21-yard strike to Nick Devere for a 21-0 lead. Pace's fourth score came with 2:22 left in the third--just five plays after
Tyler Reiman's punt was blocked on the Millersville 25. Anarella, who went 13 of 18 for 78 yards, completed his second TD strike of the game--this one from 13-yards out.
Millersville trailed 21-0 before
Collin Shank piloted Millersville's first scoring drive mid-way through the third quarter. A six-play, 64-yard drive a 23-yard completion to
Kobe Miranda and back-to-back Miranda rushes to cap the drive. Miranda's first collegiate touchdown came from two yards out with 7:26 left in the third.
Cameron Boykin and
Sean Dugan totaled 10 tackles apiece. Boykin added three tackles for loss and Dugan added two and a sack.
Millersville remains on the road next week, traveling to the PSAC West for a match-up with Seton Hill.
