Edinboro, Pa. -- The Millersville women's soccer team experienced a difficult afternoon away from Pucillo Field as it lost to conference rival Edinboro 4-2 Saturday.
Edinboro took advantage of a defensive breakdown early and scored its first goal in the opening 90 seconds of play. The Fighting Scots struck again six minutes later to double their lead.
Freshman
Lauren Downey continued her sublime play from Wednesday against Kutztown when she dribbled past multiple Edinboro defenders and scored from about 10 yards out. However, unfazed by Downey's goal, the Fighting Scots responded less than two minutes later to double their lead over the Marauders for the second time.
The second half opened with the two teams trading possession for over thirty minutes. The Fighting Scots took advantage of an opening in the 78th minute and scored their fourth goal to put the game out of reach for Millersville.
Junior
Delaney Meadows converted a penalty kick four minutes later to cut the Edinboro lead back to two. Unfortunately for the Marauders, that was the team's last attempt on goal and the game ended 4-2 in favor of the Fighting Scots.
Edinboro out shot Millersville 12-3 in the first half but Millersville came back and out shot Edinboro 8-7 in the second half. Millersville was more efficient with their attempts and eight of their 11 shots were on goal. Edinboro proved to be the more aggressive team and forced eight corner kicks to Millersville's three. Sophomores
Katia Mujica and
Kate Phillips combined for six saves during the game while Edinboro made six saves as well.
The women's soccer team return home to host conference rival Seton Hill University Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.
