Millersville, Pa. -- Millersville held No. 3 Kutztown University's high flying offense to one goal but fell short of completing their upset bid Wednesday.
The Marauders had their opportunities in the first half. Freshman
Talia Grynkewicz received an ambitious through ball up the center from sophomore
Kay Liebl, but Grynkewicz couldn't get her shot past the goalkeeper who was positioned high up in the box. Junior
Delaney Meadows had a couple strong opportunities as well. Meadows blasted a 30 yard free kick that was saved by Kutztown's Imani Taylor's finger tips. Freshman
Lauren Downey produced inspired play on the right wing all half including a bit of dribbling magic that lead to Meadows' second opportunity in the box. However, she could not fully strike the ball with a defender near her, and her attempt went wide.
Kutztown's forced back-to-back corners in the opening 11 minutes of play. Kutztown's Randi Smith kicked the second corner kick into traffic and Emily Zweircan kicked the deflected ball through the chaos and past sophomore
Katia Mujica.
Fog set in at the end of the first half and really began to engulf the field at the beginning of the second half. The Marauders struggled to build an offensive rhythm early in the second half. The Golden Bears' midfielders controlled the center of the field and kept the ball on the Millersville half while absorbing most of Millersville's pressure.
The Marauders ramped up the pressure late in the second half. Meadows and senior
Rachel Lyon put together a brilliant give and go in the final two minutes in the center of the field, but Lyon's shot from the top of the box flew just past the upper 90. Downey fired off one last shot for the Marauders in the closing 30 seconds, but Taylor saved Millersville's final equalizing attempt.
Despite the loss, the Marauder defense put together an admirable 90 minutes of play. The Golden Bears had scored 13 goals in their opening four games while Zweircan had scored five goals in her last two games. Mujica faced down 11 shots and saved eight shots on goal. The Golden Bears proved to be accurate shooters and Mujica shut down virtually every attempt. The starting back line of junior
Lauren Hoffman, sophomore
Emily Landis, and freshman
Paige Mancini kept the game within reach for Millersville.
The Marauders fall to 2-2-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Millersville will look to rebound in the conference on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at Edinboro University.Â
