Millersville, Pa. -- The Millersville women's soccer team opened up an eight minute offensive flurry that earned them three goals and a win against Jefferson University Thursday.
The Marauders were the aggressors the moment the first whistle blew. Millersville's midfield and forwards played with pace while the back line absorbed the pressure presented by the Rams. Freshman forward
Talia Grynkewicz played with pace in the center of the field and gave the Jefferson defense all they could handle. She recorded four shots and had several potential scoring opportunities in the first half. Despite Millersville's aggression, the stalemate held the entire first half.
Millersville repeated their first half strategy and netted their first goal seven and a half minutes into the second half. Sophomore
Alyssa Antonelly's free kick from outside the box soared from left to right and senior
Stacie Hallinan headed the ball into the back of the net.
Barely two minutes later freshman
Rachel Beri's pass found the end of sophomore
Kay Liebl's head as she guided the ball past Jefferson's keeper for Millersville's second goal.
Jefferson conceded a foul above the box about five minutes after Liebl's goal. Junior transfer
Delaney Meadows stepped up and blasted the free kick over the defender wall and keeper to give Millersville an insurmountable three goal lead.
Determined to maintain the result, Millersville absorbed Jefferson's offensive pressure and maintained sophomore
Katia Mujica's first clean sheet. Sophomore
Kate Phillips replaced Mujica in the final ten minutes and recorded one save. Sophomore
Amanda McElhare almost collected a couple goals in the second half but was denied by the crossbar.
Millersville out shot Jefferson 14-6 including 5-3 shots on goal. Millersville also earned three corner kicks to Jefferson's one.
Millersville begins conference play Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival California (Pa.). The Marauders then face PSAC opponent Bloomsburg away on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
