Wilmington, De. -- The Millersville men's soccer team drew with the Wilmington Wildcats 1-1 after a contentious double overtime match at the Wildcat Invitational.
The Marauders started almost too aggressive against the Wildcats and committed seven offsides plays in the opening half. However, the aggression and build up paid off inside the box late in the first half. Wilmington's Dominic Folarin drew a yellow card from the referee's pocket, and Millersville was awarded a penalty kick in the 41st minute. Senior
Kody Eberly stepped up to the mark and buried the penalty kick in the right corner of the goal to break the stalemate in Millersville's favor.
Wilmington played the aggressor in the second half. The Wildcats out shot the Marauders and forced six corner kicks. In the 78th minute, Wilmington equalized after Lorne Bickley beat
Darian McCauley one on one and buried his attempt. After the equalizer, each team traded possession until the end of regulation.
The first overtime remained scoreless after Millersville's only attempt by Eberly was saved by Wilmington's keeper. Millersville almost broke the tie in the second overtime when two of their shots were saved by Vinny Tasca's fingertips.
Eberly lead the team with three shots on goal while
Kyle Finsterbush,
Jacob Gosselin and
Marcus Frangakis all recorded two shots on goal. Millersville only recorded one more shot than Wilmington, but recorded 11 shots on goal compared to Wilmington's four.Â
Millersville plays their second game of the Wildcat Invitational Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. against Bloomfield College. Millersville then returns home to open their season at Pucillo on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. against Felician University.
