Marauders' playoff position complicated after losses at Shippensburg

Shippensburg, Pennsylvania - No. 17 Millersville baseball entered the final series of the regular season needing two wins to clinch at berth in the PSAC Tournament, and after Friday's 2-1 and 8-0 losses at Shippensburg, the Marauders are in the same position as the head home Sunday for the final doubleheader of the season.

The Shippensburg pitching staff stymied Millersville's hitters over 14 innings, holding a team that had won six in a row to one total run, three hits in game one and four hits in game two. Prior to Saturday's games Millersville had totaled double-digit hits in four of its previous six games.

The losses combined with East Stroudsburg's two-game sweep of Mansfield put Millersville (32-16, 14-12 PSAC East) in a precarious postseason position. Millersville can still clinch a berth by winning both games on Sunday against Shippensburg or with two ESU losses against Mansfield. The Marauders could also get in with one with and one ESU loss. The Marauders can also reach the postseason if it finishes ahead of Lock Haven in the standings, but Lock Haven won its first game against West Chester and was leading in game two at the time of publishing.

First pitch for Sunday's doubleheader is 1 p.m.

GAME 1
Jack Goertzen's one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom seventh gave the Raiders a 2-1, walk-off victory. Shippensburg out-hit Millersville 10-3, but Millersville starter Eli Nabholz kept the game close until the deciding seventh inning.

Shippensburg scored first on a Dalton Hoiles fielder's choice in the third. The Marauders were aided by a Shippensburg error in the fifth, and Ted Williams drove home Grayson Miller with a ground out to second base.

Dan Neff led off Millersville's sixth with a single and stole second, but was cut down on a Ben Snyder fielder's choice, and in the seventh, Millersville went down in order.

Shippensburg left the bases loaded in the first, stranded two in the second, one in scoring position in the third, one in the fourth and two in scoring position in the fifth, and finally in the seventh, it cracked Nabholz. Nick Spangler drew a leadoff wak. A single and intentional walk followed, and after a Hoiles pop out, Goertzen single to right field for the win.

Nabholz lost for just the second time, dropping his record to 7-2. He struck out six and worked around 10 hits and four walks. Mark Curtis started for Ship and tossed four shutout innings, but Andy Crum, who tossed three innings of relief, was credited with the win.

GAME 2
The Marauder bats fared no better in game two. Gabe Mosser (6-5) stifled Millersville over six innings, allowed just two hits. Millersville starter Tyler Yankosky (4-1) suffered his first loss after four PSAC East wins in a row, allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks over four innings. He was also charged with three wild pitches.

Ryan McMillen gave Shippensburg all the scoring it would need in the first at bat of the Shippensburg first. His lead off homer gave his team a lead, and the Raiders piled on five runs in the third on four hits and a pair of walks.

Millersville mustered just one hit through 3 2/3. All four of Millersville's hits were singles. No Mararauder reached base more than once.
