Millersville, Pennsylvania - Tyler Yankosky flirted with a no-hitter for the second time in as many starts, and freshmen hitters
Jimmy Cain,
Manning Brookens and
Eric Callahan sparked the Marauders at the plate in the 10-3 game two victory over East Stroudsburg. ESU's game one pitcher Tyler Eckman edged
Eli Nabholz in the opener, 2-1.
One week after taking a no-hitter through 6 2/3 against West Chester, Yankosky (3-0) was perfect through 4 1/3 and carried a no-hitter through 5 2/3. He improved to 3-0 with his second consecutive victory.
After not earning a walk in the opener, Millersville drew a season-high 10 walks in game two.
The split moved Millersville to 22-12 overall and 6-8 in the PSAC East while East Stroudsburg went to 16-13-1 and 6-7-1 in the PSAC East. The two clubs close the series Saturday at East Stroudsburg.
GAME 1
Eckman entered the start as the PSAC's leader in ERA, and he held Millersville to one run on four hits while not walking a batter. Millersville starter
Eli Nabholz fanned 11 in 4 2/3 but battled command issues. Despite walking five and hitting a batter, Nabholz kept the Marauders in the game, giving up just two runs.
Both of ESU's runs came on Jay Young's one-out single in the top of the second. But while Nabholz's pitch count climbed rapidly (113 pitches in 4 2/3 innings), Eckman cruised to a complete game. He improved to 5-0 and needed just 90 pitches to do it. Millersville went down in order in five of the seven innings.
Jimmy Cain hit a one-out single in the fifth
Eric Callahan was hit by a pitch with two outs, and
Ted Williams broke up the shutout with a single. But with the go-ahead run on second base, senior
Chas McCormick bounced right back to Eckman to end the inning. Eckman retired seven in a row to close the game.
Kyle Peterson pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief for Millersville.
GAME 2
Yankosky retired the first 13 batters he faced, and the perfect game ended on a walk in the fifth. Millersville knocked ESU starter Carson Freeman out after 3 innings.
Millersville's No. 6 through No. 9 hitters provided the bulk of the offense.
David Summerfield went 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs. Cain went 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs and two RBIs.
Manning Brookens went 3-for-4 with two runs and drove in three with a bases-clearing double in the sixth. Callahan drove in Millersville's first run of the game with a single in the second, and he finished with two RBIs.
Ted Williams reached base four times, drawing three walks to go with a single.
With a 2-0 lead in the fourth, Millersville broke open a sizable lead when McCormick plated a run with a bases-loaded infield single.
Mitch Stoltzfus was hit by a pitch to bring in the second run of the inning. Cain and Callahan brought home runs in the fifth, and Cain's bases-loaded walk and Brooken's double built Millersville's lead to 10-3.
All three of ESU's runs came in the sixth. The first three batters reached base via free pass, but Yankosky got Ian Allen to ground into a double play. A run crossed the plate to end the shutout bid. Steven Zimmerman broke up the no-hitter with a two-run homer to left.
Stephen Muscovitch tossed one inning of relief for the Marauders.
