Dobbs Ferry, New York -- The Millersville women's lacrosse team faced an insurmountable nine goal deficit at halftime as No. 17 Mercy College went on to win 19-8 Saturday.
Mercy scored the first three goals of the game before seniors
Renee Landis and
Jamie Damirgian mustered answers to bring the score to 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. Mercy answered quickly with two goals in the 11th minute to build their lead 5-2. Freshman
Sarah Leverentz drilled a free position shot to cut Mercy's lead back to two halfway through the first. Two minutes later, Mercy began their first four goal onslaught building their lead to 9-3 with nine minutes remaining. Senior
Taylor Davis scored a free position goal in the 23rd minute to stop the bleeding at 9-4. Mercy answered 42 seconds later with their first of four more unanswered goals. Mercy led the Marauders 13-4 with 2:17 remaining in the first half. Junior
Sabrina Fusco scored her 19th goal of the season in the final minute, but Mercy would answer one last time with 11 seconds remaining to make the score 14-5 at halftime.
In the second half, Davis scored another free position goal while Landis scored another goal, and Fusco scored her 20th goal of the season. Millersville held Mercy to five goals in the second half, but the game was far out of reach and Mercy lead 19-8 when the final seconds ticked off the clock.
Fusco and Landis are tied for first on the team with 31 points a piece. Fusco leads the team in goals with 20 while second on the team with 11 assists. Landis is second on the team in goals with 13 while leading the team in assists with 18. Davis' goals made her the fifth Marauder to reach double digit goals for the season, and she is currently fourth on the team with 11.
Millersville have dropped four out of their last five games after starting the season 4-0. However, those four losses have all come against ranked opponents. Millersville returns home for their first game at Chryst Field since March 21 when they try to bounce back against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Shippensburg University April 4 at 4 p.m.
