Marauders walk off, Manasek dominates in split

Millersville, Pennsylvania - The Millersville baseball team split the Sunday doubleheader against Shepherd courtesy of a Jimmy Cain walk-off hit that scored David Summerfield. The Marauders fell 7-4 in the first game but responded to win 1-0 in eight innings of the second. David Manasek was a force on the mound in the second game, pitching seven innings while striking out nine and giving up just one hit.

A three-run homer in the first inning sparked Shepherd who would never trail in game one. Shannon settled in pitching into the sixth while striking out four batters. The Marauders responded in the bottom half of the inning as Mitch Stoltzfus flied out to left to bring in Dan Neff. Summerfield would follow up with an RBI single and pull the Marauders within one run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dan Neff reached base and was brought in by a Mitch Stoltzfus sacrifice fly for the second time to tie the game at 3. Millersville could not get another run across the plate and the Rams responded in the sixth with three runs of their own. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Neff hit a solo shot to left but the Marauders could not get any closer as Shepherd snapped the four game winning streak.

Transfer David Manasek was dealing from first pitch, going 1-2-3 and striking out the last batter of the inning. Manasek had a perfect game until a single in the sixth inning broke up the clean slate. The junior would quickly get out of the inning and strike out two more in the seventh, capping off his outing.

The Marauders couldn't get anything going in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings at 0-0. Kyle Peterson came on in the 8th and sat down all three batters he faced setting the table for the bottom half of the inning.

Summerfield led off the inning by ripping a pitch to the right field wall for a triple. Cain was up next and the redshirt freshman hit a gapper to right-center that allowed Summerfield to score and give Millersville the 1-0 win.

Millersville is now 11-4 on the season and has a long layoff, hosting Wilmington on March 15.
