Marauders swept on day two of Shaw Challenge

Elizabeth City, North Carolina - After starting the season 2-0, the Millersville softball team fell twice on Saturday. The Marauders were first edged out by Bowie State 5-3 before West Virginia State dominated en route to a 12-2 victory.

It didn't take long for Bowie State to strike, getting a solo shot in the bottom of the first and getting back-to-back RBI's to take a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs would tack on another run in the third but the Marauders finally responded in the top of the fourth. Ally Kerr singled and drove in a run followed up by a Heather Lutz RBI single that cut the lead in half.

After Bowie State got a run in the bottom half of the inning, Maggie Smith hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Kaelyn Buskey. In the top of the sixth when Lutz tripled to center field but the Marauders could not bring her home. In the seventh Brit Smith lead off with a double but the next three batters went down and order and Millersville fell 5-3.

In game two, both teams were held scoreless through three innings until West Virginia State registered three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0. Millersville would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 3-2.

In the top of sixth the Yellow Jackets struck again, scoring three runs and taking control of the game. The runs continued to come in the seventh as West Virginia State scored six more and took the game 12-2.

Millersville now stands at 2-2 on the young season and will return to the diamond Sunday at 10 a.m. when they face Bluefield State.
