Clermont, Florida -Â Millersville softball dropped three but won two over the course of two days in Clermont, Fla. Millersville lost to Sioux Falls (9-1) and beat Merrimack (6-5) on Monday and then beat Post (9-8) while falling to Fairmont State (6-4) and Illinois Springfield (5-4) in close games Tuesday.
Against Sioux Falls, the Marauders were held to just four hits while the Cougars racked up 13. Sioux Falls jumped on the scoreboard early scoring two runs in the first and adding another in the second. In the top of the fourth inning,
Brittany Smith singled and stole second base as
Megan McCurdy drove her home for the first run of the day. Sioux Falls would immediately get the run back in the bottom half of the inning and scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take the contest 9-1.
It took a late-inning rally against Merrimack for Millersville to pull out a 6-5 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the second inning,
Brittany Smith got things going when she smacked a program-tying home run and put Millersville up 1-0. After Merrimack scored runs in the next two innings to take a 2-1 lead,
Raeann Buskey registered an RBI double to knot up the score at 2-2.
Merrimack's offense would rally and score three runs in the sixth inning looking primed to take home the victory. In the bottom of the seventh, Lutz would double home two runners as Millersville was within one run with two runners on base. Brit Smith would continue her big day with a two-RBI double that put the Marauders ahead 6-5.
Emma Bevard would shut down the Warriors in the bottom half of the inning, clinching the victory for Millersville.
Unlike the game versus Merrimack, the Marauders were topped by one run against Illinois Springfield as the Prairie Stars prevailed 5-4. Illinois Springfield took a 1-0 lead in the first but the Marauders scored two runs in the second and the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Prairie Stars with a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to one . In the top of the seventh Illinois Springfield scored a pair of runs to take a one-run lead which it would hold on to for the victory.
Against Post, after the Marauders took a 2-1 lead in the second inning, Post responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and looked primed to take control of the game. The Eagles would add three more runs in the fourth and held a commanding 8-3 lead.
Raeann Buskey lead off the fifth with a base hit and
Heather Lutz ripped a double to bring Buskey home and cut into the lead. After Lutz was moved over to third,
Ally Kerr singled to pick up one of her four RBIs and the Marauders were within striking distance. In the sixth, Jamie Trewehlla reached base and
Rebecca Blatt smacked a two-run shot that made the score 8-7 Post. With the bases loaded, Kerr stepped up and drilled a go-ahead double that scored Brit Smith and
Raeann Buskey. With momentum on their side, the Marauders sat down the Eagles 1-2-3 in the seventh and picked up the 9-8 victory.Â
In the final game of the weekend, Fairmont State got the better of Millersville with a big fourth inning. The Fighting Falcons were scoreless until the fourth inning, but the offense exploded in the fourth as the Fighting Falcons dropped six runs. The Marauders scored two runs in the seventh.
Brittany Smith went 4-for-4 with two runs.
The Marauders remain on the road but face Shepherd on March 21 looking in a doubleheader.
