Mars Hill, North Carolina - Eli Nabholz struck out nine in six innings while the Millersville bats totaled 12 hits in a 15-2 game one victory over Mars Hill in Saturday's doubleheader. But in game two, three errors and four issued walks helped Mars Hill win 6-5 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Millersville (6-3) has now split its last last six games after opening the season 3-0. The Marauders' 15 runs in the opener were a season-high.
Chas McCormick totaled three hits and two RBIs.
Dan Neff and
Ted Williams also drove in two. Williams scored four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks.
The Marauders fell behind after Mars Hill (8-5) struck first in the second inning, but Millersville scored eight runs in the next two innings. Aided by four Mars Hill errors and a passed ball, Millersville scored eight unearned runs. With the game well in hand in the seventh,
Aaron Taylor hit a pinch hit, bases loaded triple to right center, clearing the bases and building Millersville's lead to 13.
Nabholz (2-0) faced more than four batters in just two of his six innings. After fanning two in the sixth, he handed the ball to
Paul Wilson, who struck out the side in the seventh. Nabholz has now struck out 21 batters in his last two starts. Only one of his two runs allowed were earned, and he has not allowed more than six hits or three runs in any of his three starts.
In game two, Millersville needed three runs in the seventh to extend the game into Mars Hill's half of the inning.
Manning Brookens and Williams opened the rally with back-to-back singles, and Neff followed with one of his own, plating Brookens.
Mitch Stoltzfus tied the game with a two-run single but was stranded on second.
Millersville turned to
Kyle Peterson, who had not given up a run in his four previous relief innings. A walk, hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for Lance Edwards to single in the game-winning run. Peterson suffered his first loss. Starter
Tyler Yankosky lasted 3 innings, allowing five runs including four earned.
Matt Ulrich and
Drew Miller combined for three shutout innings of relief.
At the plate, Neff and Stoltzfus both tallied two hits.
Millersville completes its series with Mars Hill Sunday.
