TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
• Millersville wrestling travels to Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa., for the two-day NCAA Super Region 1 Championships, which begins on Friday, Feb. 24. A total of 15 teams send wrestlers to the championship with the top four place winners in each weight class advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships.
• Millersville was ranked 11th of 15 teams in the most recent regional coaches poll. Millersville has not produced a national qualifier since Mike Greck advanced to the NCAA Division I Championships in 2011. Since making the transition to Division II in 2012-13, several Marauders have come close. Three Marauders placed sixth in 2013 and one has placed fifth in each of the last two seasons. Last season, the Marauders placed 13th out of 15 teams.
SUPER REGION RUNDOWN
• Super Region 1 is among the most competitive in the nation with three teams ranking in the nation's top 20. Notre Dame College ranks fourth, Mercyhurst ranks sixth, and Pitt-Johnstown ranks 15th. Eight more teams in the region received votes to be nationally ranked. Millersville is ranked one spot higher than Alderson-Broaddus College despite Alderson-Broaddus receiving votes to be nationally ranked.
• According to the wrestling coaches, Notre Dame has wrestlers individually ranked in the national top-12 in seven out of 10 weight classes. Senior Garrett Lineberger ranks No. 1 overall in the 184-pound division while freshman Isaiah White ranks fifth in the 165-pound division.
• Mercyhurst is a strong contender as well and has three nationally-ranked wrestlers including two earning No. 1 rankings in their respective divisions. Senior Willie Bohince ranks first in the 125-pound division while senior Francis Mizia ranks first in the 165-pound division. Senior Andy Welton ranks sixth in the 285-pound division.
• The University of Pitt-Johnstown has two wrestlers ranked nationally in their divisions. Junior Cody Law ranks first in the 157-pound division while Junior Tyler Reinhart ranks third in the 165-pound division.
MARAUDER OUTLOOK
• Millersville posted a 2-8 record in duals, going 2-7 against teams in Super Region 1. Millersville won a nail biter against Gannon back in December while rolling over American International in a win in January. The team challenged Seton Hill, LIU Post and Piit-Johnstown, losing to those teams by a combined eight points.
• Millersville is led by senior David Charles and redshirt sophomore Shane Ruhnke. Charles, wrestling at 149 pounds, has posted a 14-9 record this season with his most recent win coming against Franklin & Marshall's Sam Butler along with five wins over Division I wrestlers in tournaments. He has compiled one major decision, three falls, and three more technical falls during the season. Charles ranks ninth in the region's 149-pound division. Ruhnke has earned an 18-10 record and his 18 wins is the most of any member of the team. He has won matches eight times by fall while posting a technical fall and one major decision as well. Ruhnke has earned six victories over Division I opponents including winning 4-6 matches against Division I opponents in the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Tournament alone. Ruhnke ranks fifth overall in the region's 165-pound division but will move up and wrestle at 174 pounds in the super regional.
• At 125 pounds, interim head coach Chris Yentzer will go with senior Austin Camacci. Connor Sheehan ranked seventh in the region's 125-pound division while posting an 8-9 record, but Camacci has wrestled more recently for the Marauders than Sheehan, and he posted an 8-11 record this season. Overall, Camacci has won five times by fall and one more by technical fall.
• At 133-pounds, Aaron Wildonger ranks 10th in the region division. Wildonger posted a 12-12 record. At the Shorty Hitchcock Memorial Tournament, he earned a technical fall against Navy's Jordan Denslow. Wildoner excelled in tournaments with a 10-7 record while earning three falls,.
• Millersville's lineup at the super regional is not the lineup expected at the start of the season. 133-pound Alex Baider, who placed sixth at the event last season, has missed the entire season with an injury and will receive a medical redshirt. D.J. Mele, the opening day starter at 157 pounds, won three matches at last year's regional but wrestled in just six matches this season before suffering an injury. 285-pound David Wuestner owned a 14-13 record before a season-ending injury.
