Williamston, North Carolina - Charleston handed No. 5 Millersville its first loss of 2017 and ended the Marauders' eight-game winning streak in Williamston by an 8-3 score in Friday's opener, but Millersville bounced back with a 5-3 win in game two, receiving three hits and a home run from both
Chas McCormick and
Jimmy Cain.
Millersville's (4-1) loss in game one was just the fourth loss by more than five runs since start of 2015 season--a span of 120 games. Charleston also became the first team from the state of West Virginia to beat the Marauders since March of 2010. Charleston's Adam Jafine (1-0) tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and striking out six. Millersville fell behind 4-0 before
Ben Snyder hit a solo homer and
Cole Friese drove in a run in the fifth.
Marauders' starter
Cordell Shannon (1-1) was roughed for six runs on eight hits and three walks. He exited the game with one out in the fifth. Charleston's three-run six extended the lead to 7-2, and while
Chas McCormick hit a solo homer for the Marauders in the sixth, Charleston added another run in the seventh while the Marauders stranded two in the bottom of the inning.
Tyler Webster went 2-for-2 with a walk, and Snyder finished with two hits.
The top of Millersville's lineup sparked the game two victory.
Dan Neff and McCormick combined for six hits, and McCormick hit his second homer of the day. The Marauders fell behind 1-0 early on an unearned run, but McCormick's two-run shot in the third put the Marauders on top. Cain hit a two-run homer five batters later.
Manning Brookens added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Millersville starter
Eli Nabholz went the distance, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out 12 and walking two. His 12 strikeouts in a seven inning game were the most by a Marauder since Chris Murphy struck out 13 in his no-hitter against Glenville State in 2013.
Millersville continues play in Williamston Saturday, facing Pitt-Johnstown in a doubleheader.
