Marauders extinguish the Firebirds' comeback attempt

Washington, D.C. -- After eight lead changes in the final quarter, late three pointers by junior Jade Farquhar and senior Alayah Hall along with clutch free throws by freshman Lauren Lister kept the game out of reach and prevented a District of Columbia comeback. The Marauders snapped a two game losing streak with their 82-79 victory over the Firebirds Tuesday night.

Millersville scored first and held their lead by as much as 13 points until almost halfway through the third quarter. District of Columbia lead for 39 seconds before Millersville took the lead back and held it into the fourth quarter. The chaos began with 7:29 left in the game as the Firebirds took their second lead of the game. Over the next three minutes and 51 seconds, the lead changed seven more times as each team lead by two points or less.

Finally, sophomore Courtney Dimoff drained a lay up with 3:38 remaining to take a one point lead. Farquhar hit a three to give Millersville a four-point lead, but the Firebirds responded quickly with a three of their own. Hall hit a three in the final minute to build another four point lead. The Firebirds again cut the lead to one in the final minute after making 1-2 shots from the free throw line. The Firebirds immediately fouled Lister on the inbound and the freshman guard stepped up to the line and drained both of her free throws. District of Columbia mustered a desperation three to try and tie the game, but the shot failed to go in the basket and Millersville walked off the court with the victory.

The Marauders put together their best shooting performance of the year as they shot 50 percent from both the field and three-point arch. The Marauders were also hot from the free throw line as they drained 15-17 shots at the charity stripe. District of Columbia experienced the kind of game that Millersville has fallen victim to recently. The Firebirds took 11 more shots and made two more baskets than the Marauders, and they outscored the Marauders in the paint, scored more second chance points, scored more fast break points, and scored more bench points. However, Millersville's efficient shooting from the field and especially from the free throw line gave it the edge over District of Columbia.

Dimoff lead all scorers with 18 points and set a new career-high. She shot 8-16 from the field while also scoring two three-pointers. The guard previously set a career-high of 14 points against Mercyhurst earlier in the season. Lister finished second on the team in scoring with 16 points in 25 minutes off the bench. The freshman's stamp on the game was everywhere as she shot 50 percent from the field, 88 percent from the free throw line, snagged seven rebounds, and assisted three more buckets. Hall and Bamberger continued their scoring ways as they combined for 27 points on a combined 47 percent shooting.

Millersville plays its next game following the holidays at home on Dec. 30 against conference rival Cheyney. The Marauders then host another conference match up against West Chester on Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
