Millersville, Pa. - Shawn Church hit a 3-pointer with seconds to play, capping Wilmington's rally from 17 points down with less than nine minutes to play, shocking Millersville 76-75 in Wednesday's home opener at Pucillo Gymnasium.
A pair of
Marcus Adkison free throws (1-2) put Millersville in front 64-47 with 8:51 left on the clock. Adkison, who finished with a team-high 24 points, had given the Marauders sizable lead by scoring 15 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Adkison made three of his five threes in that stretch. But Wilmington's Jermaine Head, who led all scorers with 32, captained the comeback with 21 points in 20 minutes.
Wilmington outscored Millersville 29-11 over the final 8:48. The Wildcats sank 12 of 17 shots in the stretch while Millersville made just 3 of 10 shots and committed five turnovers in the same span. Head scored 11 of his points in the final nine minutes. His jumper with 16 seconds to go pulled Wilmington with 74-73. The Wildcats immediately fouled
Conrad Chambers, but Chambers could convert just one of the two free throws.
White pushed the ball ahead into the paint and kicked it to a waiting Church, who was spotted up on the right wing. His three splashed home with seven seconds left. The Marauders put the ball in the hands of freshman James Sullivan on its final attempt, and Sullivan, well-defended, was forced into a contested three as time expired.
Adkison made 8 of 9 shots from the field, giving him 49 points in his last two games. D'Marco Suggs scored Millersville's first six points and finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards. Caden Najdawi added 13 points and eight rebounds. The Marauders committed a season-high 17 turnovers, offsetting 47.5 percent shooting from the field.
The Marauders now face a tough weekend road trip to Edinboro and Mercyhurst.
