Millersville, Pa. -- Sophomore
Kay Liebl and sophomore
Abigail Eisenhart scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation to power Millersville past Mercyhurst 2-1 Saturday.
Down 1-0 in the waning moments with seven shots on goal already registered, Liebl scored the well-earned equalizer and her seventh goal of the season in the 82nd minute. Eisenhart fed a through ball up the middle and Liebl blasted her attempt past the keeper and into the back of the net.
Momentum was swinging completely in Millersville's favor and it attacked the Lakers who were desperately trying to save the draw. Liebl and junior
Lauren Hoffman each recorded shots on goal before Eisenhart scored the game winner. The Millersville backline stopped a Mercyhurst counter attack and the Lakers were pressed too far up. Recognizing that most of the team was out of position, Hoffman chipped the ball from the defensive end to the edge of the final third where Eisenhart waited. Eisenhart turned the ball towards the goal, saw the keeper was off her line, and chipped the ball over the keeper's head to score the go-ahead goal.
Millersville and Mercyhurst played a largely uneventful first half until Mercyhurst's Anja Korte saw an opening in the Millersville defense and dribbled the ball past defenders to score on her attempt at the edge of the box. The Lakers out shot the Marauders 5-2 in the first half, but both offenses struggled to dominate the game. Millersville's offense came out of halftime like they were shot out of a cannon. The Marauders continuously overwhelmed the Lakers and shelled the keeper for the remaining 45 minutes. Millersville out shot the Lakers 11-5 and earned two corner kicks to Mercyhurst's one. Senior
Stacie Hallinan and freshmen
Alexis Glode and
Paige Mancini also kept the Mercyhurst keeper on her toes. Glode placed two shots on goal while Hallinan and Mancini each registered one.
Millersville improved to 4-6-2 on the season and 3-6-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Marauders continued their strong defense of Pucillo Field and improved their home record to 4-1-1. Millersville plays their next game on the road at conference rival Slippery Rock Oct. 13 at 4 p.m.
