Slippery Rock, Pa. -- The Millersville women's soccer team fell 3-1 at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Slippery Rock University Friday.
An offensive flurry during the middle portion of the first half from the Rock earned them a 3-0 lead. A clever cross into the box provided an opening for Maddy Tletski and the Rock to break the stalemate in the 18th minute. Five minutes later, Tletski struck again with a long shot that barely got past sophomore keeper
Katia Mujica. In the 30th minute, Mujica deflected Sofia Harrison's shot on goal, but the Rock's Taylor Gunn was able to score off the rebound to put the game out of reach.
Freshman
Talia Grynkewicz put two shots on goal while junior
Delaney Meadows and sophomore
Kay Liebl each recorded shots on goal to put pressure on the Rock's goalkeeper. However, the score held at 3-0 at halftime.Â
Millersville ratcheted up the pressure in the second half and Grynkewicz and sophomore
Alyssa Antonelly forced SRU's keeper to make two tough saves. Mujica saved a chance to shut down the Rock's counter attack which lead to an offensive build-up from the Marauders. A foul by the Rock allowed Antonelly to take a free kick. The midfielder sailed her free kick to the waiting feet of senior
Stacie Hallinan who found the back of the net and broke Millersville's scoring drought. Millersville attempted several more shots in the waning minutes of the half, and Liebl forced another save out of the Rock's keeper. However, the Marauders could not spur on a rally and the game ended at 3-1.
The Marauders out shot the Rock 15-12 but each team put eight shots on goal. The seven saves by the Rock's keeper played a significant factor in limiting Millersville's chance at a comeback.Â
Millersville falls to 4-7-2 and 3-7-2 in PSAC play. The Marauders return to Pucillo Field Oct. 15 where they have performed well this season. Millersville hosts Shippensburg at 5:30 p.m. for the second leg of the Millersville soccer program's doubleheader against the Raiders.
