Millersville, Pa. -- The Millersville women's soccer team dropped only their second match at Pucillo Field when they lost 3-0 against Shippensburg Sunday.
The Marauders and Raiders battled for possession during the opening ten minutes before sophomore
Kay Liebl attempted the first shot of the game in the 11th minute. While her attempt flew over the goal, freshman
Alexis Glode fired off a shot 30 seconds later thar required Shippensburg keeper Delaney Shifflett to save the ball. Millersville threatened again when senior
Rachel Lyon ripped off a shot from outside the box that the keeper was not ready for, but the shot unfavorably bounced off the top of the crossbar. Lyon tested the keeper again a minute later, but Shifflett made the save. Sophomore
Alyssa Antonelly recorded one last shot on goal during the first half for the Marauders in the 30th minute. The Millersville defense played tough in the first half and limited the Raiders to three shots on goal that sophomore
Katia Mujica had to save.
The Millersville offense came out of halftime swinging and recorded six shots including three more on goal in the opening 13 minutes. However, two minutes later, Shippensburg converted their first shot on goal in the second half into the first goal of the game. Izzy Weigel shot the ball from the top of the box and into the upper corner of the goal.
Millersville responded with four more shots in the following ten minutes. In the 72nd minute, Shippensburg's Taylor Moore possessed the ball deep up the left wing and shot the ball from outside the box. Her shot barely snuck into the goal. Millersville tested Shifflett again with three shots on goal before Shippensburg iced the game with their third goal in the 80th minute. Bailey Bzdak shot the ball in the box that Mujica saved by deflecting it with her hands, but Bzdak scored off the deflected rebound.
Millersville finished the game with 24 shots to Shippensburg's 12. Millersville put 10 shots on goal while Shippensburg put eight shots on goal. Millersville's offense did everything they could, but their offensive chances were stifled by strong goalkeeping.
Millersville fell to 4-8-2 on the season and 3-8-2 against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents. The Marauders have the work week off before they play their next game on the road at Clarion on Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m.Â
