West Chester, Pa. - Winning three sets by no more than two points, homestanding West Chester squeaked past Millersville 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22 Friday evening in PSAC volleyball action.
17 kills from
Erin Harman and 15 from freshman
Lindsey Blevins were nearly enough for Millersville to knock off PSAC East-leading West Chester. But the Golden Rams totaled at least 15 kills in each of their three set wins and received 48 assists from Jillian Grammar, just enough to hold off Millersville in a match that featured 23 tied scores and 10 lead changes.
The loss dropped Millersville to 11-5 (4-4 PSAC), and it was the team's second consecutive four-set loss to a PSAC division leader.
While Millersville scored a lopsided third set win, West Chester managed to eek out three closely contested sets. Millersville was within 23-20 in the opening set after a Harman kill before the Golden Rams polished off a 25-22 win with a pair of kills. In set two,
Sophia Marziello was credited with a kill and a service ace in back-to-back rallies to pull Millersville even at 23 apiece. But West Chester found Abbie Dischert for a kill, and set point came on a Millersville error.
The third was the only one-sided set of the match as the Marauders raced to a sizable advantage, leading 19-9, thanks in part to nine early West Chester attack errors.
Kelsi Ceriani recorded five kills and no errors for the Marauders while West Chester totaled 12 errors and a -.129 hitting percentage.
But the Millersville comeback ended in the fourth. With Millersville leading 19-17, Nicki Yates served West Chester to six consecutive points. Two late kills from Harman were not enough for Millersville, though, and a service error gave West Chester the match.
Millersville continues action against the PSAC East Saturday with a road trip to Cheyney.
