Mizak, Millersville continue winning streak with double-OT win over No. 2 ESU
10/11/2017 6:00:00 PM | Field Hockey
Millersville, Pa. – The Marauders are on fire. Although it was not easy in East Stroudsburg on Wednesday afternoon, No. 5 Millersville defeated the No. 2 Warriors of ESU behind a game-winning goal from Aliza Mizak in double-overtime to win 1-0.
Millersville have now won seven straight games to improve to 10-3 (5-1 PSAC), although it took 88 minutes to do so.
Mizak took three shots in the game, but it was her final attempt that gave the Marauders the win, redeeming Millersville from its loss earlier this year against the Warriors.
Millersville has now won nine of the last 10 games that have entered double-overtime. The win is the seventh straight shutout for the Marauders. Kylee Bair has been in goal for all of them, and now Millersville has successfully prevented a goal from being scored in over 500 minutes of play.
Today, Millersville held ESU to merely eight shots compared to the 19 the Marauders took. And while ESU was able to put up more shots on goal (4) than Millersville (3), the Marauders were still able to shut down the Warriors.
This almost wasn't the case. In the 84th minute, ESU's Karisa Turner put a shot on goal that had potential, but Millersville's Meredith Fagan was able to save the game with a defensive save.
This was preceded by the Marauders nearly winning when Sol Ortiz-Kreiner hit the post on a could-be game-winner.
In the end, Mizak was able to get the goal for Millersville in the waning minutes of double OT. It was her fifth goal of the season and her first game-winner this year. It was Mizak's ninth game-winner of her career.
It was the only shot attempted by either team in the second overtime period.
After starting 0-1 in PSAC play, Millersville has been able to rattle off five wins in a row in conference play.
The Marauders' next test is another PSAC opponent this Saturday, as the Marauders travel to Mansfield for a 1 p.m. start.
