Millersville, Pennsylvania - First-year head coach
Casey Stitzel and the Millersville Marauders got a signature win on Saturday in front of a raucous crowd at Pucillo Gymnasium. Sparked by a career-high 27 points from
Cornell Yarde II and a double-double from
Jordan Greene, the Marauders knocked No. 5-ranked Shippensburg from the ranks of the unbeaten, 82-65.
Millersville (7-12, 6-9 PSAC) just Wednesday ended an eight-game losing streak with a 30-point win over Cheyney and carried that momentum into Saturday's game. In its first meeting with Shippensburg, Millersville trailed by one at the start of the second half but lost by 21. Against nationally-ranked Indiana (Pa.) and Kutztown, the Marauders trailed by single digits in the final minutes but couldn't close. It was Millersville's first win over a top-25 team since February of 2013.
"It feels great," said Stitzel. "We went through a really tough stretch, things were not going our way, we were going through some adversity. I said in the first meeting of the year, that when teams go through adversity its how you respond that is going to make or break your season. A game like today, I hope it gets us over that, and helps us understand that when you play the right way we can beat anyone in the conference."
Yarde drilled 7-of-10 3-pointers and Greene totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Markeith Mont scored 10 points, and
Marcus Adkison added 10 despite playing the final four minutes with four fouls. Yarde hit his seven threes against the fourth-ranked 3-point field goal defense in Division II. The Marauders became the second Shippensburg opponent all season to shoot 50 percent from the field, and as good as Millersville's offense was, the defense was better.
Shippensburg entered the game averaging over 87 points per game, but Millersville held the Raiders to their second-lowest point total of the season, their lowest shooting percentage (38.1) and a season-low six threes.
"To beat a team that is so good like Shippensburg, I knew we all had to do our jobs," said Stitzel. "We changed the game plan a little from the last time we played them. We wanted to eliminate their 3-point looks, and I thought guys did a great job contesting them, making guys drive to the basket and make lay-ups and contesting the lay-ups. Our guys did a great job executing the game plan. This is one of those games that I've been on our guys about playing hard for 40 (minutes)...Every guy played his heart out and I'm really proud of this group and the way we played today."
Shippensburg's largest deficit in any game this season prior to Saturday was 11 and had trailed by more than six points just twice all season. But mid-way through the first half, Millersville erased a four-point deficit and built a seven-point lead with a 13-2 run. Greene's two free throws with 7:49 to play in the half gave Millersville a 23-22 lead, and the Marauders led the rest of the way. Shippensburg's star big man Dustin Sleva, who entered the game with 12 double-doubles and averaging 20.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game, sat the final 12 minutes of the first half after picking up two early fouls.
With Sleva off the court, Millersville took advantage and led 40-32 at halftime following Yarde's 3-pointer with seven seconds left. Yarde produced 16 first-half points, but was held without a bucket for the first 10:11 of the second half. Shippensburg, meanwhile, slashed Millersville's lead to 56-55. Yarde halted the Shippensburg charge in its tracks with a jumper. Greene scored four consecutive points, and Yarde splashed another three.
Tom Townsend hit a turnaround jumper from the top of the key to give Millersville a 10-point lead, 67-57. The closest Shippensburg came the rest of the way was seven, but Yarde once again drilled a 3-pointer over a defender from the left wing.
"(Yarde) had a senior moment," said Stitzel. "I told him I think he's one of the best players in the league when he plays all 40 minutes, defense and rebounding. He led out there, he made big shots."
Yarde and Green combined for 21 second-half points. Sleva went 1-for-9 in the second half, shooting 0-of-4 from three.
After back-to-back home wins, Millersville heads to Mansfield and East Stroudsburg for two consecutive road games.
