Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania - Millersville took a lead into the final minute of Saturday's game at Bloomsburg but four points by Huskies' Carnell McGirt dealt the visiting Marauders another close PSAC loss, 78-77.
Millersville (5-10, 4-7 PSAC) lost its sixth consecutive game and sixth this season in which it held a second half lead. The Marauders' last three losses--two on the road and one to nationally-ranked IUP--have been decided by 10 points or fewer, and in the last two PSAC East road games, Millersville led in the final minute of the game. Bloomsburg (9-6, 5-6 PSAC) has now won six of its last seven. Millersville has lost nine in a row at Bloomsburg.
Millersville and Bloomsburg traded the lead six times and stood tied six times Saturday. Millersville led by as may as 10 in the second half and held the lead for nearly 23 minutes of the game. After
Marcus Adkison hit a 3-pointer to make the Millersville lead 59-49 with 10:06 to play, Bloomsburg ripped off an 18-4 run, hitting 4-of-5 shots and 9-of-11 free throws while Millersville shot 2-of-10. But with the score 67-63 in favor of Bloomsburg with just over four minutes remaining,
Amadou Kaba scored his career-high 15th point, and
Jordan Greene, who finished with 20 (one shy of his career high), splash a 3-pointer to give Millersville the lead.
The Marauders maintained their advantage into the last minute.
Cornell Yarde II scored on a drive to give Millersville a 77-74 lead with 1:16 remaining. But that's when McGirt asserted himself. McGirt scored on Bloomsburg's next possession to cut the deficit to one. Yarde's miss with 40 seconds left was grabbed by Kaba, giving Millersville the opportunity to drain even more clock. But just four seconds after the inbounds pass, McGirt stole the ball. Christian Mortellite's shot with 16 seconds left missed, but McGirt grabbed the offensive rebound and scored the putback, giving Bloomsburg a 78-77 lead.
Millersville still had a chance to respond with 13 seconds remaining. Adkison missed on a drive, and while Kaba grabbed an offensive rebound the ball was tipped out of bounds with 0.7 seconds left. The inbounds pass was deflected by Bloomsburg, and Adkison's potential game-winner was not released in time.
Five Marauders scored in double figures and only six players scored. Usual starter
Jon Lott did not play, giving Greene his first career start. Greene made 7-of-17 shots, 2-of-3 threes and 4-of-4 foul shots. Kaba tallied his first career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Millersville travels to West Chester on Jan. 18 for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
