Easton, Massachusetts - Millersville field hockey came into the season ranked second in the country, but had a tough test against fifth-ranked Stonehill Monday. In a Labor Day afternoon matchup, the Skyhawks downed the Marauders 2-0 behind goals from Shea Healy and Taylor Long.
The first goal of the game came in the 21st minute when Healy was assisted by Alexandra Dillon. Marauder goalie Sam Rumler was tested, facing seven shots, five of which were on goal. Stonehill added an insurance goal in the 53rd minute when Long slipped another one past Rumler, Alexandria Sylvia was accredited with the assist.
Millersville's loss was only its second regular season loss in the las two seasons. Both losses came by shutout. Millersville attempted only nine shots on the game compared to 22 shots against Newberry in the season opener. Four shots were placed on goal including two by
Robyn Spatichia.
Aliza Mizak and
Carly Castle each had a shot on goal as well but were thwarted by Skyhawks goaltender Sara Freedman.
Millersville falls to 1-1 after the loss, marking the first time since 2011 that the team did not open with two wins. Stonehill improves to 1-1 with its loss coming on Saturday against No. 1 ranked East Stroudsburg.
The Marauders return to action Saturday, Sept. 10 at home, where they will take on PSAC opponent Seton Hill at 12 p.m. Seton Hill is 0-2, and went 1-15 in 2015, including a 2-0 loss against Millersville.
