THE MATCH-UP
• Millersville travels to Bloomsburg Saturday for a PSAC Eastern Division match-up. The Marauders are in search of its first PSAC East road win since Nov. 8, 2014, and its first PSAC East road win outside of Cheyney since Oct. 22, 2011 (East Stroudsburg). Bloomsburg opened its PSAC East slate with a 54-14 win over Cheyney, rushing for six touchdowns in the game. Millersville is looking to end a three-game skid while Bloomsburg is trying to start 2-0 against the East for the ninth consecutive season.
• Bloomsburg leads the all-time series 43-30-5 and is riding a 16-game winning streak. Millersville's last win over the Huskies came in 1999 by a 31-21 score at Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg's 16-game streak includes 12 games with at least 40 points scored. Millersville has scored just 8.2 points per game over the last six games.
THE LAST TIME OUT
• A
Christian Kemp touchdown catch and
P.J. Santos pick six gave Millersville football a 13-6 lead early in the second quarter. But visiting Kutztown scored 35 unanswered points, including 21 in the second quarter to pull away for a 41-13 PSAC East win. Craig Reynolds entered the game as the PSAC's No. 2 rusher and totaled 157 yards and four touchdowns, leading a rushing attack that totaled 309 yards. Kutztown outgained Millersville 559-271, and with nine sacks allowed, Millersville totaled 18 net rushing yards.
SCOUTING BY THE NUMBERS
• Millersville ranks 15th in the PSAC in total offense, scoring offense and is 16th in rushing offense. The strength of the unit is the efficiency of
J.J. Paige (four touchdowns to two interceptions) and a balanced set of targets in
Kevin Wiggins,
Christian Kemp,
Phil Overton and
Tyler Zilen, who have combined for 59 of the team's 74 catches. Millersville controls possession, averaging 33 minutes of possession time each game. However, Paige has been sacked 25 times for 125 yards. Paige has been sacked seven more times than any other QB in the league.Â
• Bloomsburg's defense is opportunistic, intercepting a league-leading six passes. The Huskies rank second in passing defense, allowing just 180.3 passing yards per game. The rushing defense has not been as strong, ranking 10th and allowing 157.5 yards per game.
• Defensively, Millersville ranks eighth against the pass and 12th against the run, but is allowing 5.3 yards per carry. And that could spell trouble against a Bloomsburg team that has long been known for its rushing attack. 2016 is no different as the Huskies average 203.5 yards per game. Leading the way is Lawrence Elliott Jr., who ranks seventh in the league at 104.0 yards per game. His 10 touchdowns are tops in the PSAC.
• Millersville's defense has generated 21 points on interception returns, and Bloomsburg's quarterback Chris Palubinsky has tossed four INTs to one touchdown. His 115.6 efficiency rating is 14th in the 16-team league.
PAIGE'S PASSING
•
J.J. Paige has passed for at least 247 yards in three of four games this season and in four of five since the end of 2015. The last Marauder QB to put together a similar string of games was Dan Csencsitz in 2004 when he totaled 246 yards or more in four of the first five games of the season. Paige ranks fifth in the PSAC in completion percentage (60.5).
TARGETS FOR TIGHT END
• Tight end
Tyler Zilen caught four passes against Kutztown, bringing his career total to 26 catches in 24 games. That's the most career catches by a Marauder tight end since Greg Frantz, an All-PSAC East First Team selection, caught 30 passes from 2008-11.
BIG PLAY KEMP
• Redshirt freshman
Christian Kemp is quickly become a big-play threat for the Marauders. Against Kutztown, Kemp made a 51-yard catch, which was Millersville's longest play from scrimmage in 2016. Kemp leads the team with two touchdown catches, and not only does he have the longest reception, he also owns the team's longest kick return of 58 yards. He is averaging 21.85 yards per return, which ranks ninth in the PSAC.Â
ACTIVE BACKS
• Millersville's starting secondary (
Alpha Khan,
Jarrid Satterfield,
P.J. Santos and
Kendall Marks) has broken up 17 passes in four games. Satterfield leads the way with seven, ranking second in the PSAC. Khan, with five, ranks ninth. Along with Mercyhurst, Millersville is one of only two teams in the PSAC with two players ranked in the top 10 in passes broken up.
• Santos' 89-yard INT return against Kutztown was the longest in the PSAC this season by 20 yards. Millersville's three defensive touchdowns (two scored by linebacker
Jaleel Robinson) lead all PSAC teams. California ranks second with two.
DUGAN'S DEFENSE
•
Sean Dugan was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week after totaling a career-high 19 tackles against Seton Hill. Dugan's 19 stops were the most by a Marauder in the "Statcrew Era" (since 2002). He was one shy of the national high for the season. He made 12 solo stops, 2 1/2 tackles for loss and 1 sack, totaling 15 yards in losses. Dugan followed that game with 10 tackles against California. He now ranks second in the PSAC in tackles with 38, averaging 9 1/2 per game. He has four career double-digit tackle games.
• Dugan has been making plays since his redshirt freshman season. Over his last 18 games, he has piled up 20 1/2 tackles for loss and 7 sacks.
EXPERIENCE ON DEFENSE
• Millersville's defense returns eight starters from 2015, and the group of
P.J. Santos, Alpha Kahn,
Logan Kinser,
Drew Seaburg,
Morgan Faughnan,
Rob Varner and
Sean Dugan have combined for 140 starts. Santos is a fourth-year starter and has totaled 31 starts. Santos has eight interceptions in his career.
WIGGINS' CLIMBING THE CHARTS
•
Kevin Wiggins, now a junior, has caught a pass in 25 consecutive dating back to the start of his freshman season. Now with 107 career grabs in 25 games, Wiggins was the second-fastest to 80 catches in program history, trailing only hall of famer Sean Scott, who totaled 108 grabs, 1,503 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two seasons. Wiggins moved into a tie for 10th place on Millersville's career catches list with former All-America wide receiver Dondre Gilliam and trails Millersville hall of fame tight end Roger Smith by one for ninth place.
• Wiggins totaled eight catches and 101 yards in the opener against Pace, marking his second career 100-yard game. He also caught a touchdown pass, giving him 13 in 25 career games. He is one TD catch shy of Bill Burke and Roger Smith for ninth place on the career list.
• Wiggins tied for 11th in the PSAC in touchdowns and 20th in catches in 2015.
• Wiggins was voted the team's offensive MVP in 2015.
• Since 2001, only three wide receivers have caught 40 or more passes in two consecutive seasons. Wiggins joined Jamal Smith (2009-10) and Andy Neupauer (2003-04).
MULTI-PURPOSE OVERTON
• As a freshman in 2015,
Phil Overton After leading the team in rushing yards, yards per carry, kickoff returns, kick return yardage and punt returns. Overton has led the team in rushing in each of the first four games. He's also made at least three catches in each of the first four games, ranking him third on the team in receptions with 16. He has caught a pass in 13 of 15 career games. He totaled 100 all-purpose yards in the opener. He is the primary punt returner and has four kickoff returns for 93 yards, including a long of 48, which he posted against Kutztown in week four. Overton has caught a pass in six consecutive games.
BIG BOOT
•
Evan Stahl is the PSAC leader in punting average at 41.6 yards per punt. In game one against Pace, he averaged 49.3 yards on six punts. He's landed three inside the 20 and has five punts of 50 or better including two against California. His 63-yarder against Pace was the second-longest of his career and his best since a 69-yard punt in 2013.
