THE MATCH-UP
• PSAC Eastern Division play begins Saturday when Kutztown visits Millersville, where the Marauders own an 18-6-1 record since 1968. Kutztown, however, has won four of the last five games played at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Millersville is looking to shake off the week three loss at California while Kutztown is aiming for its first win after an 0-3 start. It is Kutztown's first 0-3 start since 2013 and the second since 2005.
• Week three has not been kind to the Marauders the last two seasons. In losses to California and Slippery Rock, the Marauders were limited to a total of 78 yards of offense in the two games and were outscored a combined 136-0. Week four marks the start of the PSAC East, schedule, however. Millersville has not won a PSAC East opener since 2007.
• Millersville leads the all-time series by a 57-29-3 margin, but it has been all Kutztown over the last six years. The Golden Bears have won six in a row and eight of the last nine meetings dating back to 2007. Between 2007-2010, the four games were decided by an average of just seven points. But over Kutztown's six-game winning streak, the Golden Bears have averaged 48.7 points per game and have scored at least 45 points in each of the last five games. Millersville, meanwhile, has averaged 8.6 points per game over the last five. Millersville's last win came in 2009. It was a 41-35 win in overtime.
•
J.J. Paige's streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass and no interceptions came to an end at five last week. Paige had thrown 10 touchdowns and no picks over his previous four games but was held without a TD and threw a pick against Cal.
• Kutztown's Terence Scanlon had an outstanding start to the season before suffering an injury and missing game three at Seton Hill. Kutztown went with Brennon Scott at quarterback to start but fell behind 27-6 at the half. Collin DiGalbo entered and went 15-for-24 with 145 yards and a touchdown. Scanlon is listed as the starter on this week's depth chart with DiGalbo as the No. 2.
• The Kutztown coaching staff has plenty of Millersville connections. Defensive coordinator Ross Pennypacker was an All-PSAC East linebacker for the Marauders before graduating in 2005. He also coached on the defensive side of the ball after graduation. Brand Mangle, a 1981 graduate and former All-PSAC East selection, was a longtime offensive coordinator for the Marauders. Jim Ketner, who coaches cornerbacks at Kutztown, was an All-PSAC East defensive back under Coach Gene Carpenter. Ketner received a bachelor's and master's degree from Millersville and coached for the Marauders for 16 years.
THE LAST TIME OUT
• California scored three touchdowns on special teams and defense and limited the Marauders to just 40 yards of offense for a 61-0 final score. California held a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter when Jawan Turner sacked
J.J. Paige, scooped up a fumble and raced 36 yards for a touchdown. Garry Brown returned the second half's opening kickoff 98 yards for one of the three touchdowns he scored in the game. 10 seconds later, on CalU's ensuing kickoff,
Nii Kotei Nikoi was stripped by Arnel Farmer, and Todd Coles Jr. scooped and scored from 25 yards out. California scored 28 points in the third quarter. The Vulcans recovered two fumbles and picked off two passes with a total of 143 return yards in those plays.
SCOUTING BY THE NUMBERS
• Millersville's offense is in need of a spark, ranking 15th in the 16-team league in scoring. The good news for the Marauders is that Kutztown ranks just two spots higher and averages 3.3 points more per game. Kutztown and Millersville also rank 12th and 15th respectively in total offense, but Kutztown averages 377 yards while Millersville averages 245.3. Millersville ranks 15th in rushing offense, averaging just 1.8 yards per carry. Kutztown has an explosive rushing attack, which averages 4.7 yards per carry. Craig Reynolds is the No. 2 rusher in the PSACat nearly 124 yards per game and his 7.6 yards per carry average is second among players with more than 20 carries.
• The Millersville and Kutztown defenses are similarly matched, ranking 10th and 11th in the league. Millersville allows 35.3 points while Kutztown averages 37.3. The Marauder defense ranks ninth in total defense while Kutztown ranks 11th. The Marauders' defense will need to improve against Kutztown rushing attack. Millersville is currently allowing 4.8 yards per carry. Last season, Kutztown rushed for 400 yards against the Marauders with three players going for 94 yards or more. Kutztown rushed for 383 yards in 2014.
ACTIVE BACKS
• Millersville's starting secondary (
Alpha Khan,
Jarrid Satterfield,
P.J. Santos and
Kendall Marks) has broken up 14 passes in two games. Cornerbacks Khan (5) and Satterfield (5) lead the way. The duo is tied for fifth in the PSAC. Millersville is one of only two teams in the PSAC with two players ranked in the top 10 in passes broken up.
DUGAN'S DEFENSE
•
Sean Dugan was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week after totaling a career-high 19 tackles against Seton Hill. Dugan's 19 stops were the most by a Marauder in the "Statcrew Era" (since 2002). He was one shy of the national high for the season. He made 12 solo stops, 2 1/2 tackles for loss and 1 sack, totaling 15 yards in losses. Dugan followed that game with 10 tackles against California. He now leads the PSAC in tackles with 33. He has four career double-digit tackle games.
• Dugan has been making plays since his redshirt freshman season. Over his last 17 games, he has piled up 19 tackles for loss and 6 1/2 sacks.Â
MR. ROBINSON'S NEIGHBORHOOD
•
Jaleel Robinson made quite an impact in his first collegiate game. He intercepted two passes, both of which he returned for touchdowns and was subsequently named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week. Robinson totaled four tackles and a tackle for loss. Robinson was the lone PSAC player to intercept two passes and he scored as many defensive touchdowns as any other player scored offensive touchdowns in the week. Robinson's two-pick game was Millersville's first since 2012, and he made the team's first INT return for touchdown since 2012.
• Robinson followed his two-interception debut with another turnover in week two. He recovered a fumble and returned it 20 yards, giving him a total of 71 return yards on three turnovers. He also recorded another TFL, giving him 2 TFL for a total of 13 yards lost.
EXPERIENCE ON DEFENSE
• Millersville's defense returns eight starters from 2015, and the group of
P.J. Santos, Alpha Kahn,
Logan Kinser,
Drew Seaburg,
Morgan Faughnan,
Rob Varner and
Sean Dugan have combined for 135 starts. Santos is a fourth-year starter and has totaled 30 starts. Santos picked off three passes last season and has seven in his career. Seaburg leads the team with 25 consecutive starts.
WIGGINS' CLIMBING THE CHARTS
•
Kevin Wiggins, now a junior, has caught a pass in 24 consecutive dating back to the start of his freshman season. Now with 102 career grabs, Wiggins was the second-fastest to 80 catches in program history, trailing only hall of famer Sean Scott, who totaled 108 grabs, 1,503 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two seasons. Wiggins trails former All-America wide receiver Dondre Gilliam by just five catches for 10th place on Millersville's all-time list, and trails Millersville hall of fame tight end Roger Smith by six for ninth place.
• Wiggins totaled eight catches and 101 yards in the opener against Pace, marking his second career 100-yard game. He also caught a touchdown pass, giving him 13 in 24 career games. He is one TD catch shy of Bill Burke and Roger Smith for ninth place on the career list. Wiggins has nine touchdown catches in his last seven games.
• Wiggins tied for 11th in the PSAC in touchdowns and 20th in catches in 2015.
• Wiggins was voted the team's offensive MVP in 2015.
• Since 2001, only three wide receivers have caught 40 or more passes in two consecutive seasons. Wiggins joined Jamal Smith (2009-10) and Andy Neupauer (2003-04).
MULTI-PURPOSE OVERTON
• After leading the team in rushing yards, yards per carry, kickoff returns, kick return yardage and punt returns in 2015, Overton picked up right where he left off. Overton has led the team in rushing in each of the first three games. He's also made at least three catches in each of the first three games, ranking him third on the team in receptions. He has caught a pass in 12 of 14 career games. He totaled 100 all-purpose yards in the opener. He is the primary punt returner but has yet to return a punt on two tries.
BIG BOOT
•
Evan Stahl is in his fourth season as the Marauders' punter and kicker. He is the PSAC leader in punting average at 45.3 yards per punt. In game one against Pace, he averaged 49.3 yards on six punts. He's landed three inside the 20 and has four punts of 50 or better including two against California. His 63-yarder against Pace was the second-longest of his career and his best since a 69-yard punt in 2013.
