Women's soccer knocks off Kutztown for season opening win

Millersville, Pennsylvania – The Millersville women's soccer team grinded out its first win of the season during the home opener against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Kutztown after Amanda Mcelhare scored to provide a 1-0 win for the Marauders.

Only 13 players were available for Millersville and the team relied on their defense to make up for their lack of depth. Kutztown pressed offensively to take advantage of Millersville's defensive focused formation. Kutztown forced nine corner kicks and attempted 26 shots.

Senior goalkeeper Samantha Wolfe stopped seven shots on goal in the first half. Wolfe's biggest save came in the 51st minute when she stopped a penalty kick. Kutztown increased the offensive pressure to equalize after Mcelhare's goal, but Wolfe stopped eight shots on goal in the second half to earn her first clean sheet of the season.

Millersville relied on its defense to absorb Kutztown's pressure, and then push the ball up on counter-attacks. The Marauders forced three corner kicks and attempted seven shots with three on target. In the 65th minute, Alexandrea Powell pushed the ball up the right wing before crossing it into the middle where Mcelhare waited to bury the go-ahead goal.

Millersville spent the final minutes of the game compacted in its defensive formation to prevent an equalizer from Kutztown. Kutztown's defensive line set up on Millersville's half of the field and lobbed the ball back towards Millersville's goal, but Millersville's defense did not break.

Kutztown forward Alyssa Ryan led the team with three shots on goal while twelve Kutztown players registered at least one shot on goal.

By the time the whistle blew, Kutztown topped Millersville in every offensive statistic except for one: the score.

The Millersville women's soccer team's next match is against conference rival Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa., on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.
