Philadelphia, Pa. - The third-ranked Millersville baseball team scored nine runs in the ninth to pull away for an 11-1 win over homestanding Philadelphia University Tuesday afternoon.
Mitch Stoltzfus totaled three singes to extend his hitting streak to 28 games.
Stoltzfus' streak-extending performance put him in second place all-time in PSAC history and now trails Slippery Rock's Adam Urbania, who set the league record for longest hit streak at 34 just last season. Stoltzfus reached base five times, stole a base and drove in three runs.
Millersville entered the ninth with a 3-1 lead, receiving a sacrifice fly from
Dan Neff in the third, a sac fly from
John Brogan in the sixth and a RBI single from
David Summerfield in the eighth.
Tyler Orris started the ninth with a single and two stolen bases and scored on a two run single by Stoltzfus. The Marauders sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. In his second at bat of the inning, Orris cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Millersville finished with 13 hits, drew seven walks and scored double-digit runs for the 11th time this season. Along with Stoltzfus, Summerfield also totaled three hits--hits third three-hit game since March 18. He's hitting a team-best .488 over his last 14 games.
Freshman
Kyle Peterson (3-0) tossed a career-high six innings for the win. He did not allow a run on four hits and three walks.
Stephen Muscovitch,
Matt Ulrich and
Mike Mock also provided shutout performances out of the pen. Mock struck out two in his ninth-inning appearance, giving him 17 in 12 innings. He has also not allowed an earned run in 11 appearances covering 12 innings.
The Marauders return to PSAC East play on Friday. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
