Lock Haven, Pa. - Dan Stoltzfus led the Millersville lineup with six hits in a doubleheader sweep of Lock Haven Friday at Foundation Field. The third-ranked Marauders won the opener by a 7-1 score and took the nightcap by a 7-4 final.
Stoltzfus recorded three hits in both games and drove in a total of five runs. He keyed an offense that concluded the day with 19 hits. The wins improved Millersville to 29-3 overall and 12-2 in the PSAC East. The sweep helped the Marauders build a four-game lead in the PSAC East standings at day's end.
The one-two starting pitching punch of
Brandon Miller (6-1) and
Cordell Shannon (5-1) was effective for the 10th and 11th times this season. Miller struck out 10 and allowed one run on six hits and a walk in the opener, and Shannon surrendered three runs on seven hits over five innings in game two. Freshman reliever
Mike Mock, despite allowing his first earned run of the season, picked up his third save after pitching two innings.
Millersville jumped on the board early in both games. Two runs crossed in the first inning of the opener when Stoltzfus and
Jeremy Musser hit consecutive doubles. In the third,
Tyler Orris and
Dan Neff, who put themselves into scoring position with a double steal, scored on a Lock Haven error.
Mitch Stoltzfus scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0. The Marauders added two more in the fourth with RBI singles from D. Stoltzfus and Musser.
Miller struck out four in the first three innings and recorded at least one punch out in each inning. Lock Haven's only run came in the seventh. All six of Lock Haven's hits were singles.
The Marauders struck for four in the opening frame of game two. The Stoltzfus cousins doubled in runs and Musser followed a with a two-run home run--his fourth of the season. The lead grew to 6-1 before Lock Haven added two runs in the fifth off of Shannon. Shannon had allowed just a solo home run in the second inning prior to the fifth. Despite allowing three hits and a walk in the fifth, he worked his way out of the jam by relying on his defense. Lock Haven picked up a run in the sixth of of Mock, but he rolled a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and worked a 1-2-3 seventh to end the game.
D. Stoltzfus finished game two with two singles, a double, three RBIs and a run. Musser hit a homer and doubled. Orris finished with three singles and a pair of stolen bases on the day, moving his career total to 90--within seven of Ernest McCoy's Millersville record. He also moved into sixth in PSAC history after passing former Marauder
Evan King, who finished his career with 89.
Mitch Stoltzfus' record hitting streak ended at 28 after a hitless opener. He was credited with a RBI and reached on an error.
The Millersville/Lock Haven series will resume on Sunday at Cooper Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
